CDTA Goes Wireless

Because the city of Saratoga Springs and Saratoga County have undergone considerable change in recent years as  tourist destinations, a college town, a convention center and more, transportation, topics of parking and mobility continue to be issues of utmost importance.
In the current economy and with increasing concern for the effect continued growth in traffic will have on the environment, taking the bus or public transit makes more sense every day. Annual ridership for 2008-09 for Saratoga service is 354,147, indicating that ridership has tripled since the new Saratoga service started.  More half of that ridership occurs on the Route #50 bus that runs between Schenectady and Saratoga County.

CDTA also currently provides traditional fixed route transit service in and around Saratoga Springs. The service is used primarily by senior citizens to travel to downtown and to shopping centers along Route 50 in Wilton. CDTA also contracts with Upstate Transit to provide service to Albany (Northway Commuter Express). Seasonal service is provided in the summer months connecting the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) with Skidmore College along Broadway, the city's main thoroughfare. CDTA also owns and operates the Saratoga Springs Train Station, which opened in 2004 to rave public and community reviews.
In recent years, the Capital District Transit Association has worked with many community stakeholders, government officials, business people and transit customers to develop a comprehensive Transit Service Plan for Saratoga Springs. One of the latest developments CDTA has announced this week is that it now offers free wireless internet service on its NX Commuter Xpress service. NX's entire fleet of 15 buses is equipped with Wifi providing customers with another convenient amenity to enhance their trip to and from Saratoga and Albany.

The wireless internet service, provided through Sprint, has been tested over the last few months.  Customers can connect their laptop or PDA to the internet through a wireless router which has been installed on all NX buses.

"We are making our services more attractive to customers by providing better amenities that make riding more convenient and comfortable", said CDTA Chairman David Stackrow.  "Offering customers the ability to access email or browse for information makes their work trip more productive or relaxing as they choose."

CDTA assumed sponsorship of the Northway Commuter service from Saratoga County in April 2003.  NX travels along the I-87 corridor with stops at South Glens Falls, Saratoga County, Ballston Spa, Round Lake/Mechanicville, Clifton Park/Halfmoon, Airport Park/Wolf Road, SUNY/State Campus, and Downtown Albany.  For more information about NX Service or any other CDTA Service Information, customers should contact CDTA's Customer Information Center at 482-8822 or visit www.cdta.org.  Information operators are on duty 6am-7pm weekdays and 8:30am-6pm weekends and holidays.
