In my opinion

I was extremely happy when I heard the news that the accused kidnapper had been caught and will be facing justice. As always, good police work combined with a cooperative and observant witness led to his arrest.
Over the past few days I found it sobering how many people were talking about this case. People, women and men alike, were scared and I don't blame them. This happened in our own back yard, it was violent and it could have been any one of our daughters, wives or sisters.

Despite the victory of his capture, the reality is that bad people still walk the streets everyday and will continue to prey on unsuspecting victims.

For this editorial I am going to put on my other hat and assume my role as head instructor at Spa City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At Spa City BJJ, we teach men and women realistic self-defense.
My message today is simple: Be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to fight back if in a violent situation. Luckily in this case our brave victim took a stand, acted and escaped what could have been a deadly situation.

In a perfect world you will never find yourself in such a situation, but if you do, here are a few tips to stay alert and prevent the crime before it happens: go out in groups and always walk to and from locations with a friend; watch the people around you - anyone is a potential predator; if you are sitting in your car in a parking lot, lock your cars doors; if not you are an easy target; avoid dark or isolated areas, evil always hides in the shadows.

Next, if you find yourself trapped in a situation where your body and/or life are in jeopardy, be prepared for combat. Desperate times call for desperate measures and you have to tap your basic instincts. Channel the anger and fear into efficient technique that will render your assailant incapacitated. Our goal is maximum efficiency with minimal effort.

The bottom line is women who resist an attack are less likely to be raped than those women who do not resist. According to the Bureau of Crime Statistics, 38.6 percent of victims who fought back avoided the rape/sexual assault and 22.9 percent of those who fought back scared off their attackers.

Obviously in a short editorial I can offer nothing but a very cursory overview of some basic ideas or techniques. These tips in no way replace training and repetitive drilling with a qualified instructor, but if these few ideas help even one person, I will have earned my pay for the week.

None of these are rocket science, they are simple and effective.

Rule # 1 - Attackers don't like attention or a scene. Therefore, scream, holler, yell and knock things over.

Rule # 2 - Men don't like getting struck in the groin. Therefore, knee it, kick it, grab it and twist it.

Rule # 3 - No one likes being struck in the eyes. Therefore, jab them, poke them, and elbow them.

Rule # 4 - After completing 1, 2 and 3: turn, run and run FAST.

Also never forget to look for objects around you. A simple pen makes a wonderful puncturing weapon and a glass mug is a solid blunt object for striking the face or head.

Some may think that these measures are extreme and over the top, but I would rather be judged by 12 than carried 6.

Stay safe and have a great weekend.
