Sarah is currently a nominee for the Americana Music Association's Best New Artist award.
Her latest CD "The Stars are Out" has received very favorable reviews from NPR's "Fresh Air," and her live performance at BB King's Club in Times Square has been lauded by The New York Times.
The show is a benefit for ThoroFan whose mission is to foster the growth of the thoroughbred industry by providing racing fans with an organization that will foster their interests. Admission is $10. The show is sponsored by Saratoga Today and WEXT 97.7 radio.
I had the privilege of talking to Sarah while she was touring in the Midwest:
Q: Your third CD "The Stars are Out" has been well received and represents to many people a departure in that it is more upbeat and lively. How was the decision made to go that route?
A: "Once we came up with a plan, Sugar Hill was supportive immediately. In truth, this CD is more aligned with what people experience when they see us live.
Dancing has always been important to our fans, and so we took a lot of input from them into our decision-making. Another key element is that we had a member leave the group who played steel pedal. Replacing him with a guitarist opened up the sound to more possibilities."
Q: In addition to some terrific original songs, the new CD features an extremely diverse set of 5 cover songs running the gamut from Smokey Robinson ("Being with You") to NRBQ and the Lemonheads. What was the process of deciding what went in?
A: "The Smokey song was a favorite of mine, really the first song I got to love as a very young child. Each of the band members brought 5 nominees for covers to the table. We narrowed down the process based on what we could do well, meaning could we bring something special in the arranging that worked well, paid homage to the original but made it into something that was our own."
"Also, note that if you purchase our vinyl edition of "The Stars..." it contains 2 original songs that do not appear on the CD."
Q: How far and wide are you touring in support of this album?
A: "So far we have hit 46 out of the 48 contiguous states, and we like to use a 'concentric circle' strategy, where we re-visit several markets and build up our fan base over time. The backing of Sugar Hill is incredible: they do the distribution, provide in-house publicity and financial support."
"Interestingly, this will be our third try at playing in Saratoga Springs. We had logistical problems once, and a freak ice storm knocked us out another time... so we are revved up for Sunday's show."
Q: You've been nominated for the Americana Music Association's Best New and Emerging Artist award. Are you going to the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville for the announcement?
A: "You bet! We've played at their showcases for three years now. It's an honor to be nominated for the first time."
Q: So when you win, who are you going to thank first?
A: "Its got to be the parents. They've put up with my screeching the longest."
