Power Up

What do you do when you are relaxing in your air conditioned home on the hottest day of the summer and all of a sudden, the power goes out?
"As we've seen recently, the power grid can be susceptible to storms and blackouts," Tom Dwyer, owner of Saratoga Power Systems LLC said. "But if you have a backup generator, you don't have to worry about things like your air-conditioning going out, or for that matter, the furnace when it becomes cold again."

Tom Dwyer has owned and operated Saratoga Power Systems LLC for the past three years, providing residential, industrial and commercial clients with a wide variety of electric generators chosen to fit their specific needs. As an authorized dealer of brand names such as Guardian that have been in the business over 50 years, Dwyer helps customers find and install the generator that is ideal for their situation.

"Mostly what we do is home standby generators," Dwyer said, indicating that while residential clients are the majority of his business, he also provides generators for commercial and industrial work. "People want automatic generators so they don't have to worry about going out to their garage to run cords, or to refill them with gas. All that hassle can be eliminated.  With Generac generators, everything's in place, and automatic. As soon as the power goes out, the generator turns on; when the power comes back on from the utility company, the generator turns itself off."

Dwyer offers several models and types of generators for his customers to choose from; perhaps most notable are the Guardian Series. Perfect for home use during backup or emergency situations, these are the best selling home standby generators on the market, providing anywhere from 8 kilowatts to 60 kilowatts of power. Designed to activate automatically within 10 seconds after a power outage, the Guardian Series last up to three to four times longer than competitive models. Usually powered by natural gas or propane, they are the most environmentally friendly available, consuming less fuel and releasing fewer emissions than any generator in its class. The larger, more powerful models are fit for any home or business as a backup solution, and typically are "liquid cooled. They basically have car engines in them. They've got a radiator, and they last a lot longer," Dwyer said.
Another generator offered by Saratoga Power Systems is the QuietSource Series, which as the name indicates makes less noise than others, but not at the expense of providing the power you need.

"Normal generators run at 3600 rotations per minute," Dwyer explained. "The QuiteSource run at 1800 rpm. So by running at a slower speed and producing a high voltage output, they can be much quieter. You can hardly hear them when they're on."

Designed for large homes to small businesses, they are Generac's top-of-the-line model.
"Once a week they come on and test themselves for 15 minutes, and some people would rather not hear that," Dwyer said. "With the QuiteSource, they run so quietly that you won't have to."

For customers interested in finding a power solution for their camping, construction, or remote power needs, Saratoga Power Systems offers portable generators as well. Usually but not limited to 15 kilowatts and under, Generac's portable generators are designed for convenience. Operating on regular gasoline, the portable generators can power anything from simple appliances on a camping trip to providing professional grade power for day long construction projects.

"They're competitively priced and they're relatively reliable compared to most of the more expensive brands out there," Dwyer said. To back up his claim, he pointed to the number of warranty claims he has received over the past three years. "97 percent of my clients have no warranty claims within the first two years. So the generators are reliable, and they're cost effective."

Part of the service offered by Saratoga Power Systems is a free onsite estimate, where Dwyer himself will make a trip out to your site and help you determine what your particular needs and desires are when it comes to a backup power solution.

"I check out the circuits that the customer wants backed up, determining what their needs are, and then I come up with solutions fall within their budget," Dwyer said.

Customer service is a priority for Dwyer; he makes sure his customers are fully satisfied with the product and the installation.

"With Saratoga Power Systems, you're going to get the owner of the company actually coming out and doing the estimates, meeting with the customer, and participating in the installation," Dwyer said. "With a lot of companies, they'll just send out their employee of the week or whoever they have. Some of them are trained, some of them are not. I'm factory trained and reliable" Dwyer said.
