Residential Water Filtration Systems and Solutions

Geoffrey Kothman, owner of Verity Water LLC in Ballston Lake has been providing residential customers with water filtration options for the past three years.
Located at 4 Clifford Drive, Verity Water is equipped to handle a wide range of filtration challenges, treating everything from hard or sulfuric water in the home to filtering out staining elements in the water, which can lead to the degradation of a home's appliances. The quality of water supply to homes will likely differ from house to the next due to several variables; if a homeowner isn't satisfied with the quality of their water, there are a host of solutions available that Verity Water can provide and install.

"When most people feel that their water quality isn't what it should be, they start looking for solutions," Kothman said. "They might have hard water or a chlorine taste in their water that they're frustrated with. If they're on wells, they might have staining elements like iron or manganese. Their water may smell like rotten eggs, which would be sulfur."

For each problem that may exist with your home's water supply, there are different filters and methods that Verity Water can employ.

"There are treatment systems available that address a wide range of common problems out there," Kothman said. "There are specific technologies that address specific problems. If you have hard water in your own municipally supplied water, there will be a different solution to that than if you're going to treat for sulfur if you are drawing from a well. Usually a homeowner will have some idea of what needs to be treated with their own water, but we can help them determine that before moving forward."

Once the problem with a home water supply has been determined, the homeowner can choose from two different types of filtration systems designed to treat the water at its source. The first system, known as a Point of Entry System, is used to treat the entire home, and is typically installed along the main line where the water enters. Point of Entry Systems treat everything from the drinking water in your sink to water running through your dishwasher, clothes washer, hot water tank and shower simultaneously, providing clean and filtered water throughout the entire house.

"Point of Entry Systems treat the whole home for elements in the water that are going to cause problems for appliances, such as washing, showering, bathing and heating systems," Kothman said.

The second type of system is known as a Point of Use System. Point of Use Systems can be installed under sinks or on refrigerators to address specific problems and are geared more towards purifying a home's drinking water than the water running through appliances.

"Point of Use Systems generally address taste improvement," Kothman said. "Let's say you called and said, 'Geoff, I don't really like the taste of chlorine in the water I have here.' That's where someone would use a filter just for taking the chlorine out for their cooking, coffee, and drinking water. At the same time, you can filter the water to an even greater degree on a Point of Use System than you can for the whole house."

Thanks to a wide range of products available on the market, most homes can be fitted with either of these filtration systems, regardless of the existing water system configuration.
"As an independent water treatment dealer, I have available to me what I consider the finest water treatment equipment in the marketplace, much of which is still manufactured in the United States," Kothman said. "I tend to use premium brand systems with a five or six decade history, providing exceptional water treatment components along with great warranties." Kothman added, "There are a lot of products available out there that are suitable for even the toughest installations."

Having a home filtration system can effect more than just a simple improvement in the water's taste. "The main benefit is that if you have a problem with your water, take it hardness or iron, manganese or sulfur, the long term effects of those elements aren't health related, but they are the cause of potential damage to a home's system. Your hot water tank is going to run less efficiently. Your soaps and detergents in washing machines are going to operate must less efficiently than with soft water. Staining can destroy porcelain finishes or factory finishes on tubs and tiles," Kothman said. "It can cause you to have to replace a kitchen faucet in your sink, which can cost about $200 currently. So there's a monetary benefit to having high quality water moving through your appliances so you aren't faced with costly repairs down the road."
