Wilton man charged in hit-and-run

Jeffery Carpenter, 20, of 5 Hammond Drive, Wilton, was arrested on July 19 after he allegedly hit a pedestrian on July 9 with his car and then proceeded to leave the scene. The incident took place in the Peter's Pub parking lot off of Maple Street in Glens Falls.

The unidentified pedestrian suffered minor injuries and was admitted to the hospital, where he was able to provide information on Carpenter's identity.

Carpenter was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, also a misdemeanor.

Round Lake bypass eases village traffic

A 1.6-mile stretch of road directing traffic between Route 67 and Curry Avenue for commuters heading towards the Northway has opened in the village of Round Lake. The bypass, which aims to cut back traffic in the small community's downtown area, will provide large trucks and cars with an alternative to Round Lake's winding and twisting roads.

The Bypass is largely in response to the arrival of the GlobalFoundries computer chip plant being constructed at Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta, which officials expect will drastically increase the volume of traffic in the region. Thanks to the new road (located just off of Exit 11), Round Lake should be spared from the brunt of the traffic connected with GlobalFoundries.

Helicopter chases down homeless man

Philip K. Boyce Jr., 30, homeless, was arrested Monday in connection with two break-ins in the Greenwich community after police tracked the man down using a helicopter to locate his tent along the Battenkill River. Boyce, who is accused of kicking down a door and stealing money and jewelry from a residence on March 4, as well as stealing a Volvo station wagon on May 20, was charged with second-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny and petit larceny.

Officials say Boyce, who was discovered living in a tent near the river, was arrested without incident. He was sent to the Washington County Jail for lack of $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

'Pork Chop' saves 71-year-old

Nick Argenti was sitting outside in his backyard enjoying the summer Sunday morning when suddenly, the 71-year-old collapsed on the lawn unconscious. The tube from the Argenti's oxygen tank (which he requires due to a respiratory condition known as asbestosis) came loose, and with his wife, June, out of the house and attending church, no one was there to see the incident.

No one that is, except for 'Pork Chop.'

Pork Chop, the 9-year-old beagle-dachshund mix family dog, began barking and howling as his owner lay unmoving on the grass.

"He was baying and howling," June Argenti said, "and my neighbor said to her husband 'something's wrong.'"

Concerned, Argenti's neighbor looked over the fence and saw Nick lying on the ground with Pork Chop standing over him. Immediately they called the paramedics, and Argenti was rushed to the hospital where he was treated and eventually released on Tuesday in good health.

All thanks to a little dog named Pork Chop.

"My hero," June Argenti said.

Officials eye possible Geyser Road trail

In connection with the Northwest and Southwest Neighborhood Associations, as well as Saratoga County Supervisors Joanne Yepsen and Matthew Veitch, a $1.58 million dollar project to create a walking and bicycling trail along Geyser Road, providing a safer alternative to the area's busy streets has been proposed to the Saratoga Springs City Council.

The two mile trail, which would run adjacent to Geyser Road from the town of Milton to the Route 50 intersection, would allow pedestrians and bikes easy access to many popular sites in downtown Saratoga, including Saratoga Springs High School and the State Park.

In order to finance the project, officials are hoping to seek donations from private individuals and businesses, mostly due to the large budget deficits the city is currently facing.

Grocery store theft leads to two arrests

Nicholas S. Bahr, 27, and Leah N. Dickinson, 23, both of 219 White Birch Estates, South Glens Falls, were arrested Tuesday after the couple was caught trying to steal meat from the local Hannaford grocery store.

Employees who noticed the theft in progress were able to provide police with the duo's license plate number, which officials were able to use to track down their home address.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement agents to his residence, Bahr was seen trying to flee the scene, but was chased down by patrolman Jason Martin, who suffered a shoulder injury during the pursuit.

Bahr has been charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest, and petit larceny. He has been sent to Saratoga County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Dickinson was also charged with petit larceny and resisting arrest, as well as conspiracy and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. She was arraigned in Moreau Town Court and released.

Federal stimulus money to help fund Affordable Housing Group

The Saratoga Affordable Housing Group, a non-profit organization which provides apartment buildings to low-income families and individuals, has received $100,000 in federal stimulus in its efforts to improve its facilities on Allen Drive. The Saratoga Affordable Housing Group is a subsidiary of the Saratoga Springs Housing Authority.

Officials indicated that they are hoping to use the funds to tear down several derelict apartment buildings and built a new 15-unit complex in their place. The money will also be directed towards the completion of a 22-space parking lot along Allen Drive.
