The Saratoga Race Course opened its gate to the public on Wednesday, July 29 with a bang, kicking off the official start of the 141st track season. Visitors from far and wide gathered outside as early as 6:00 a.m. to line up for the official opening at 11:00 a.m., helping to boost attendance from last year's opening significantly.

A reported 25,444 people showed up for the opening ceremonies, a 40.4 percent increase in attendance over last year's opening day. On-track handle totaled $3,651,222, a 29.8 percent increase over $2,813,982 in 2008. All-sources handle, which includes money bet on Saratoga races from simulcast outlets nationwide, was $14,216,133, 24.4 percent up from $11,431,846 in 2008.
"Opening Day was an unqualified success," said NYRA President and CEO Charles Hayward. "The crowd of 25,444 confirms the resiliency of Saratoga Opening Day in challenging times."
Victor V. Hernandez-Perez arrested in abduction case
On Sunday night, July 26, Saratoga Springs Police arrested Victor V. Hernandez-Perez, 23, of 222 Center St. Apt. 3, Corinth and charged him with second-degree kidnapping and first-degree robbery in connection with an attemped rape and kidnapping which occured
late Thursday night, July 23 in Saratoga Springs. Both crimes are class-B felonies.
On Thursday, July 23 at around 10:50 p.m., the Saratoga Springs Police Department responded to the area of Walnut Street and Grand Ave. for a report of a missing 24-year-old female. While Saratoga Springs Police were speaking with the person reporting the missing female, the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police were responding to a residence on Howe Rd. in the Town of Greenfield where a naked female had run to a residence yelling for help.
Reportedly the victim was walking on Walnut Street between Washington St. and Grand Ave. when officials alledge Hernandez-Perez approached her from behind and struck her on the head. She was dragged into the sliding side door of a minivan and driven away from the area. Hernandez-Perez threatened the victim with a handgun and ordered her to take off all her clothes. The victim managed to escape from the van and run to the Howe Rd. home where the residents assisted the victim until the police arrived.
Hernandez-Perez was arraigned in Saratoga Springs City Court on Monday morning and remanded to the Saratoga County Jail without bail.
Yepsen announces bid for reelection
Saratoga County Supervisor Joanne Yepsen (Democrat) announced her bid for reelection on Wednesday night for one of the two supervisor seats. Yepsen, who has received endorsements from the Democratic, Independence, and Working Families parties, is running unopposed, but made sure to stress that she's, "not taking anything for granted."
Yepsen, who is a chairperson on the county racing committee, Equalization and Assessment committee, Legislative and Research committee and Veterans Committee, has also begun several organizations of her own, such as Sustainable Saratoga.
"For me, it's about how we do business and how we conduct ourselves as elected officials. And that means being accessible, accountable and conducting ourselves in a bipartisan manner in an open government," Yepsen said. "We need to focus on what makes Saratoga great - arts, culture and tourism, and be aware of our future."
Yepsen is running for her third term in a two-year term position.
Cuomo's office informs seniors about home contractor fraud
A representative from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's Office spoke at the Saratoga Springs Senior Center about home improvement fraud as part of Cuomo's statewide Consumer Awareness Initiative. The seminar discussed home improvement contract law and the Attorney General's website, www.nyknowyourcontractor.com which provides New Yorkers with the tools they need to make informed decisions when it comes to hiring a home improvement contractor.
The website allows New Yorkers to search and see which contractors have been subjected to legal action and which contractors have had substantiated consumer complaints filed against them. Additionally, they can access helpful tips that will assist in selecting a reputable contractor as well as links to state and county agencies which offer consumer assistance and the ability to check the status of a contractor's license.
Today show rocks the boat at Lake George
Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry from NBC's "Today" show appeared in Lake George on Monday, July 27 to film their live show in front of hundreds of excited fans and residents. Approximately 600 to 700 people gathered in Bolton Landing to catch a glimpse of the two stars as they sat in lounge chairs at the Sagamore Resort and roasted marshmallows, coming in as one of the largest off-site crowds the show has ever attracted.
As part of their introduction to Lake George, the co-stars enjoyed a trip by boat across the lake, an introductory lesson on the art of fly-fishing and a stroll down the lake's famed beaches.
