As kids head back to school pressure is taken off parents to find a nine-to-five babysitter for the summer months.
However, with many families, children are still too young to be home alone until parents come home from work.
To alleviate this problem, most school districts have before and after school programs that are both recreational and educational to bide the time until parents or guardians return home.
The YMCA of Saratoga hosts a program they call B.A.S.E., or Before and After School Enrichment for children in the Saratoga Springs City School District. The program was established in 1985 as a means to serve the working families. Children are provided a safe and comfortable atmosphere and parents have the sense of security that their children are in a safe place.
The before school program begins at 7 a.m. and takes place at Lake Avenue Elementary, Dorothy Nolan Elementary and the YMCA of Saratoga on West Avenue. The same locations host the afternoon program that runs until 6 p.m.
According to the YMCA of Saratoga's Web site, "The children are provided a safe environment in which they can grow intellectually, physically socially and emotionally as they learn to work with and care for others. Caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are intertwined, taught, and utilized in all things done on a daily basis."
Educational projects are selected to hit one of the core school subjects such as math, science, arts, physical education, literacy and homework help. Once a week children may participate in a swimming program.

Schuylerville Central School District hosts a number of before and after school programs, both for childcare and enrichment, said elementary school principal Michael Mugits.
Before school programs take place from 7 to 9 a.m. at the school and the after school program runs from 3 to 6 p.m. Parents can drop off or pick up their child when it is convenient for them and activities include intramural sports, homework help, access to computer labs and various clubs such as newspaper club, foreign language classes and art club.
"We have something for all the kids to enjoy, whether it is climbing on the rock wall, snowshoeing or learning American Sign Language," Mugits said. "Students can also get extra help with assignments and homework if need be. Our main goal of this program is to provide accountability and safety for the children in the district."
Parents sign their kids in and out from the programs and parents must commit their children to the program on a weekly basis.

Finally, Ballston Spa Central School District has partnered with the Ballston Area Community Center to provide before and after school programs. It is licensed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and strives to meet the needs of children at various stages of development by creating an environment that is relaxed and home-like, fostering independence, cooperation and self control.
According to the Ballston Area Community Center's Website, the mission of the program is "to create an environment of safety and support which promotes the social and emotional enrichment of children through providing quality child care and opportunities which strengthen the family unit, without regard to socio/economic background."
Daily activities offer options so that there is something to interest each child including sports programs, arts and crafts and a balance of active and passive activities to introduce children to new hobbies and interests.
