Back to school symbolizes a new beginning for most, and at
Schuylerville Central School District, there are many new beginnings
that will embark at the beginning of the school year.
Following the retirement of previous superintendent of schools Leon Reed, Ryan Sherman joined the district on July 1st as Reed's successor. Sherman was chosen after a five-month-long search for a new superintendent that took into account the opinions of faculty, staff and students.
Sherman comes to Schuylerville with five years of experience as superintendent of Argyle Central School District and was principal of Argyle Middle School for two years before that.
"Sherman's qualities include the leadership skills necessary to move our district in the same direction we've enjoyed in the past and also the enthusiasm to take it up a notch-which we'll expect as the state and federal governments raise expectations for academic achievement," Michael Booth, president of Schuylerville's Board of Education said in a statement. "Ryan has made a commitment to our district success and that's the motivation we, as a Board and as a community, were looking for."
While Sherman is still new on the job, he said he feels comfortable coming into the job and the upcoming school year in the midst of a large building project.
"The transition has been very smooth so far," Sherman said. "There are so many people here in Schuylerville who have been welcoming. Schuylerville Central School District was fortunate to have Dr. Reed and his expertise for so long; I plan to build on his successes."
Sherman and his family recently moved to the district from Glens Falls in order to be fully involved in the community he will be serving. His middle son, Owen, will be starting kindergarten in the district and his oldest son, Stratton, will be entering third grade. His youngest son, Lukas is only two years old.
"The kids are really excited to be going to school where I will be working also. We are all really looking forward to it," Sherman said.
Sherman is already settling in to his new home in Schuylerville, especially since he grew up in a rural setting.
Sherman attended College of St. Rose for his undergraduate and graduate education, receiving his bachelor's degree in education and his master's degree in education. He recently finished a doctorate program at The Sage College in administrative leadership. Additionally, Sherman holds the following certifications: New York State School District Administrator (SDA), New York State School Administration and Supervision (SAS), New York State 7-12 Social Studies and New York State K-12 Physical Education.
As the district is in the midst of a massive construction project, Sherman is working hard to ensure everything is working on task and that everything will be in working order for school to start in the second week of September.
"We're hearing rumors that the district won't be prepared to open school on time; these rumors are completely false," said Superintendent Ryan Sherman. "All aspects of the construction project are on schedule and progressing well. There are no delays."
By the time the summer is over, the following will occur:
• Initial work on the Elementary School addition: The foundation work on the Elementary School classroom and gymnasium additions will be finished and masonry work will begin. The construction crews plan to have a weather-tight shell completed before the snow flies so construction can continue throughout the winter months.
• Initial work on the Jr.-Sr. High School addition: The retention wall is in place. Work on the footings and foundation will continue throughout the summer and into the fall. The stairwell at the south end of the building has been removed. The area will serve as the connection between the current building and the new wing.
• Asbestos removal at the Elementary School and Jr.-Sr. High School will be finished.
Electrical and plumbing upgrades will occur at both school buildings. This work includes the addition of a new electrical "switch gear" that will feed both schools. Campus visitors will see this piece of equipment in the island near the Elementary School. Also, Elementary School classrooms are being outfitted with additional data drops in anticipation of future technological needs.
• Construction crews will finish constructing a second retention pond, which will accommodate the runoff created by the Elementary School addition.
"Upgrading the schools is an important project. We need to accommodate the needs of our students and we do anticipate possible growth in population as GlobalFoundries and other businesses move to this area," Sherman said. "My number one priority right now is to make the start of the year as smooth as possible for students, teachers and staff. I'm really looking forward to it."
