Melanie and Eugene Dallas got a surprise of their lifetime when they received a phone call in July.
Melanie Dallas was notified that she and her husband won an international retail award from Pet Product News International, a trade publication for pet specialty stores. The award is for Outstanding Specialty Store and Sloppy Kisses was the only store in New York that won an award.
"There are tons of stores in New York, especially New York City. It is such an honor to be awarded this," she said.
She said that hundreds of applicants were vying for the Retailer of the Year award and others such as the award Sloppy Kisses won. All of the awards were announced in the August issue of Pet Product News International.
Dallas credits her win to the opening of her second store in Clifton Park as well as her community events such as Yappy Hour and Bark in the Park.
"We opened a second store in a time when most stores like mine were closing. We are surviving and expanding," she said.
It has been seven months since the Clifton Park location opened up and the Dallas' are currently scouting a third location in Albany. Dallas said she has customers who come from all over to visit Sloppy Kisses. So far this racing season, Sloppy Kisses is up three percent in sales over last year.
"We opened up Sloppy Kisses four years ago almost as a therapy for me. I was a stay-at-home-mom and I needed an outlet. Of course I wanted my store to succeed but I wasn't thinking at that time about opening up a second and possibly third location. You are thinking down the road, you are thinking month-to-month," she said. "I know that people are struggling right now, but when things are going well, why not talk about it? I want everyone to know that we are Sloppy Kisses and we are here!"
Sloppy Kisses is located at 493 Broadway in Saratoga Springs and in Clifton Park Center in Clifton Park. They specialize in baked treats for dogs, apparel, leashes and collars and much more. Sloppy Kisses is a pet-friendly shop so customers are invited to bring their furry friends with them.
