Sully the Cat speaks out

When I discovered Jill wrote a whole column about Vida, I was pur-r-r-r-turbed! Not only did she feature Vida, but she also made it sound like dogs study and read their owners while cats are too aloof to notice.
Not true! The only difference is cats are subtler about it while dogs put on a big show wagging their tails and acting cute so they can get a biscuit. The truth is cats rule while dogs CAN ONLY drool!!!

Actually, for a dog Vida is OK. She lets me weave in and out of her legs, she shares her water bowl and beds with me, and occasionally when I get into the catnip, tear through the house and bounce on her back, she does not seem to mind. But enough about Vida--let me introduce myself. I am Jill and Steve's cat, Sully. They brought me home from the shelter two years ago. They also call me "Twitch," "Scrappy," or "Suleiman, the Magnificent." I am a little guy, but I am a tough guy just the same. I only weigh 7 pounds, can curl up as tight as a young squirrel, but also can stretch out as long and lean as a weasel.

I am a handsome boy with tiger stripes on my back, legs, and tail, and I have leopard spots on my tummy. I have striking markings around my eyes, almost like a human wearing eyeliner.  My color is grey with black highlights. I am shorthaired but my tail is really long. I am an indoor cat because Jill says indoor cats live, on average over three times as long as outdoor cats. At times I wish I could go outside, but at least our house has lots of windows with ledges for me to sit on while I watch the birds, squirrels and chipmunks.

One of my favorite activities is playing with Steve. He and I play pretty rough and I love it. He turns me upside down and lifts me high into the air. Jill, on the other hand, plays gently with me, which is nice too, but I prefer the rough and tumble play with Steve. What I do love to do with Jill is ride around the house on her lap while she operates her power wheelchair. We zoom from room to room and I hang tight.

Jill and Steve bought me a scratching post, but it was not high enough for me to fully stretch out. So they had their builder friend, David (also a cat lover) make me a six-foot-tall climbing tree with two platforms and a piano wire that bounces every time I hit it with my paw or my tail. I never tire of this tall scratching post/climbing tree. It is terrific. Thanks David.

When I am feeling a little devilish and Steve is snoozing in his easy chair next to my climbing tower, I quietly reach the top platform then spring down to land on his chest. Wow! He wakes with a start, grabbing at the air because at first he doesn't know what hit him. Then he realizes it was me, and I run and hide laughing all the way.

I also love to play with a small tinfoil ball. I bat it around like a hockey player. I hide it under the bed or in the closet, but I always find it again. The string game is fun too. Steve and Jill get me batting at the string with a feather tied to it. The stick makes the string and feather dance and I jump and turn until I am dizzy.

Besides all this play, I love to sleep. I will sleep for hours; open my eyes, yawn, and find a new position to sleep some more. Life is good at our house.  But never forget that cats are watching their humans too. When Steve packs his bags for a short trip, I know he is going to be gone for a few days and the night before he leaves, I curl up next to him with my purring motor going strong because I will miss him. That is not being aloof. So always remember that cats are different from dogs, but just as terrific because cats rule while dogs can only drool!
