Local firefighters deliver baby

Lake Avenue Firefighters were not expecting a baby on Monday morning, but they were certainly prepared for a delivery.
At 10 am, Captain John Kirkpatrick received a call notifying firefighters that soon-to-be-mother Cora Burns of Saratoga Springs was on her way to the station.

"We grabbed our gear and EMS bags, and got going," Kirkpatrick said.

When they got downstairs, Cora Burns was already there, and baby Grahm S. Burns was not waiting any longer.

"This one was going to happen as soon as the car door opened," Kirkpatrick said, and it did.

After a quick two minute delivery, Grahm, born 7 pounds and 4 ounces, was welcomed by the Lake Avenue firefighters. He is the first baby to be delivered at the station.

Firefighters Joe Dolan, Pete Frolish, Mark Dejnozka and Jason Yourdon assisted with the delivery, which was a first for all of them.

"You just do the job as taught, and the fear factor goes out the window," Kirkpatrick said. The delivery was successful; "everything went well."

Cora and her son arrived safely at Saratoga Hospital where they met father Greg Burns and brothers Grant, Gavin and Griffin.

Backstretch Tap Room and Terrace closes doors

It appears that the ghost of Madame Jumel has claimed yet another victim - this time permanently.

Backstretch Tap Room and Terrace, which occupied the space at 38 Caroline Street, Saratoga Springs since April 2009, has been dark since Monday. The location was the site of a very popular bar/tavern known as Madame Jumel's up until the late 1990s. Since that time, a few owners have been unsuccessful in making the location work. After Madame Jumel's, the location was known as Hurricane Sam's, The Artisan, It's Confidential, and now Backstretch.

The first sign of difficulty for the owners of Backstretch came in early July, when the expiration of a temporary liquor license caused them to be closed over the very lucrative July 4th weekend. Then on Monday, July 13th co-owner Robert V. Lizardo was charged with 3rd degree grand Larceny when he allegedly bounced a $40,000 check to repay a loan for his share of ownership.

Louden Trail opens behind Wilton Mall

A 1.3-mile trail behind the Wilton Mall was opened to the public on Monday, August 3, as Saratoga County Supervisor Matthew Veitch and Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Art Johnson were on hand during the opening ceremonies.

"I have been a strong advocate for trails in the City of Saratoga Springs, and I am proud to have worked with my fellow committee members on this important initiative for 2009. It has been a team effort of several people planning and constructing this trail that will improve the quality of life for all County residents. We were able to get this project completed without spending any additional funds from the County surplus; this was all done within our 2009 budget," Johnson said.

The Louden Trail is a 1.3 mile nature trail that is completely contained in one of Saratoga County's Forest land parcels. The County has owned several forested parcels for over 80 years, and one of this year's initiatives was to convert several of the parcels into public trails.
The Louden Trail is bordered by the Wilton Mall to the west, DEC Forestry Parcel 45 to the north, Louden Road to the south, and a proposed subdivision to the east.

The trails are designed for walking, biking, horses and other non-motorized use.

El Savadoran gang linked to Saratoga Springs

The Saratoga Springs Police Department arrested two men on Thursday, August 6 who they believe are connected with a violent international gang from El Salvador, known as the MS13.

The men, who were arrested as illegal immigrants, are being investigated to determine whether they had any connection to Salvadoran Victor V. Hernandez-Perez, who last week was arrested for the attempted rape and kidnapping of a Saratoga Springs woman.

The MS13 gang, or the Mara Salvatrucha, have been linked to numerous assaults, human trafficking, burglaries and contract killings in several nations. The gang is known more for its presence on the west coast and is not particularly prevalent in the northeast.

A total of three men were arrested in their home above the Big Apple Restaurant and Lounge located on Route 9 in Saratoga Springs. Only two are suspected to have gang ties. The third man has been released.

Horse thief arrested

Jose Romero, 41, of 28 Short Rocks Road, Branford, Connecticut was arrested last Thursday, July 30 for allegedly stealing a horse from the Saratoga Race Course on Tuesday, July 28. He has been charged with third-degree grand larceny, a felony.

The horse, named Buddy, was first reported missing to the Saratoga Springs Police Department on Tuesday by the owner. The quarter horse thoroughbred was later found on the Oklahoma Training Track grounds in the possession of the owner's ex-boyfriend. The horse was unharmed and return to the stalls.

Romero was arraigned in city court on Wednesday and remanded to Saratoga County jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear back in court on Thursday, August 13.
