Sheriff's deputy accused of sexual assault

Donald A. Harder III, 28, of Hadley was charged with a first-degree criminal sexual act after Harder, who works for the Saratoga Police Department as the sheriff's deputy, allegedly used his uniform to force a woman to perform a sexual act on him. The charge is a class-B felony.
Harder was assisting in a civil matter in Edinburg during his shift on Tuesday when afterwards he stayed to speak with a 27-year-old woman he was acquainted with. The woman later phoned the Sheriff's Department to inform them that Harder had forced her to perform a sexual act on him in his patrol car.

Harder, who was made deputy in 2006, was arrested after an immediate investigation at the headquarters in Corinth. He appeared in Corinth court on Wednesday and was remanded to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail or $50,000 bond.

Skidmore has jumped up and down in its rankings for marijuana use over the past several editions of the review, having placed first in 2003.

Universal Preservation Hall receives grant

A total of $224,256 in grant money was awarded to the Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs for restoration work aimed at redeveloping the courtyard and entranceway. Commissioner Carol Ash of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation was on hand to present the money for the project, which will see the courtyard renamed "Community Plaza."

There is one catch, however. The grant received by the Universal Preservation Hall is what is known as a matching grant, meaning that the hall will have to raise enough money to meet the $224,256 amount in order to keep the funds. At the time the grant was presented, no money had been raised by the organization to meet the mark.

The hall is now requesting donations from members in the community. For further details, please visit them on the Web at www.universalpreservationhall.org.

Ballston Spa school tax to increase

Residents in Ballston Spa will see a marginal increase in their school taxes this year, but not quite as large as was initially projected. The rise is partly a result of the $70.5 million budget passed for the 2009-2010 school year.

Originally taxes were expected to jump an estimated average of $64 per household. The actual figure has been adjusted to only $50 per household.

The tax levy has remained constant from the previous year at 1.9 percent.

The two pleaded guilty to stealing items spanning three counties, including Saratoga County, over a three month time frame.

They were charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class-E felony. They were remanded to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of bail.
