Grand Larceny Arrest
Saratoga Springs Attorney, Patrick M. Reidy was arrested on two counts of Grand Larceny and a Class C Felony this Monday, August 24. Reidy, age 46, lives in Gansevoort, NY and is the owner and operator of Excelsior Title on Broadway in Saratoga. Reidy is alleged to have taken in excess of $400,000 in proceeds from two different victims for Real Estate sale and the Home Equity Loan use. Reidy's bail was set at $75,000 cash and $150,000 bond. The investigation is continuing and the Police Department would like to hear from anyone who believes they are a possible victim of Reidy or Excelsior Title. Please contact Inv. Saratoga Race Course Attendance Up
Attendance and betting on thoroughbred horse racing at Saratoga Race Course continue to outpace last year's levels, racing officials said on Aug. 24.
With two-thirds of this year's meet in the books, attendance totals 588,200, up 1.2 percent from last year's pace.
Also, on-track bets at Saratoga are up 3.2 percent, to $74.3 million. "All-sources" bets, including those placed on Saratoga races from TV simulcast outlets nationwide, are up 1 percent, to $326.2 million.
The horse racing meet in Saratoga runs 12 more days, through Sept. 7.
The track's signature race, The Travers Stakes, will be held Aug. 29. The race has a $1 million purse and will feature the winners of the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes--two of the three legs of horse racing's Triple Crown.
Handlers for the winner of the third leg, Rachel Alexandra, announced on Aug. 24 that the filly will run in Saratoga's Woodward Stakes, which will be held Sept. 5. Following that announcement, The New York Racing Association Inc., which operates Saratoga, raised the purse for the race by 50 percent, to $750,000.
Ballston Spa to get $150,000 Grant for Energy Improvements
The village of Ballston Spa will recieve a state grant in September from a petroleum overcharge restitution fund. The $150,000 grant will fund energy efficiency projects for improving the village's municipal buildings. The improvements are expected to cut $22,000 from heating and electrical costs per year.
Jockeys Volunteer for a Good Cause
On August 25 at Impressions on Broadway, jockeys Mike Luzzi, Sam the Bugler and Kent Desormeaux signed autographs to raise money for The Race Track Chaplaincy, an organization that supports the backstretch community. The event raised $200 from 20 autographed photos sold for $10 each. Impressions is located at the corner of 368 Broadway and Phila Street in downtown Saratoga Springs. Photographer, Joe Gleason, and Impressions of Saratoga, sponsored the autographing session.
Ice Cream Eating Contest Brings Messy Results
As part of the Shadwell Travers Festival, Stewart's Shops hosted their annual ice cream eating contest on August 26, outside the Silks Room at the Saratoga Race Course. The contest featured three events with 10 competitors that were based on age: kids ages 6-12, teens and adults. Each contestant had to eat a pint of vanilla ice cream. Paige Lisicki, age 12 of Galway won, the children's competition. Her winning time was 2:34, and she won a gift certificate for 12 half gallons of Stewart's icec ream. Austin Fleischer from Livingston, NJ won the teen competition with a time of 2:14. He was awarded a gift certificate for 17 half gallons of ice cream. Finally, Christa Dederick, age 18 of Berne, won the adult, 18 and over competition. She ate her pint in 1:01, and was awarded a gift certificate for 23 half gallons of ice cream.
Man Arrested at Local Hotel for Shooting Himself in the Foot
On August 26, Kevin C. Lewis, of Stony Point, NY shot himself in the leg at the Adelphi Hotel on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. The investigation began at the Saratoga Hospital when police were notified that a 57-year-old male was being treated for a suspicious wound to his leg. Police suspect that Lewis may have shot himself accidentally. Lewis was staying at the hotel with Helen Diaz, 64, of Maywood, NJ. City Police executed a search warrant at the hotel room, where they found a .40 caliber Glock handgun. City Police charged Mr. Lewis with Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, a class A misdemeanor and Ms. Diaz was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C Felony. Mr. Lewis does have a valid pistol permit in New York State; Ms. Diaz does not have a valid pistol permit and during the investigation was allegedly found in possession of the handgun. Both were arraigned in City Court Thursday morning, August 27. Mr. Lewis' case was adjourned to a date in September and Ms. Diaz was remanded to the County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.
