Take a Child Outside Week is in mid swing, as youngsters across the City embrace nature and the great outdoors.
The awareness event is part of a national effort called No Children Left Inside, which aims to reconnect children with their natural environment. The weeklong effort began on September 24 and continues through September 30. Children and Nature Saratoga, in cooperation with local organizations and government, is hosting events all week to encourage natural awareness.
Ardie Pierce, founder of Children and Nature Saratoga, aims to break down the obstacles that keep children from understanding their natural world.

"It is our responsibility to raise the next generation of environmental stewards. If our children are raised strictly indoors, they won't know how to care

Studies show that the nation's overwhelming child obesity rate correlates with a lack of outdoor activities, and that children who learn outside are simply more knowledgeable.
"We want to raise smarter, happier and healthier kids," Pierce said.

The events include a nature scavenger hunt on Saturday, September 26, at High Rock Park from 1 to 3 p.m. On Sunday, children and their families are welcome to attend a fairy house building event, at Skidmore's North Woods from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, another scavenger hunt is taking place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Bog Meadow Brooks Nature Trail.
Other events hosted by local organizations include a nature hike and service project at a vineyard in Greenfield, put together by Saratoga PLAN. The hike day is scheduled for Sunday.
"It's not just a hike; it's also an opportunity to explore a local farm. It's a chance for kids to connect with local food and see what's growing around them," Andy Fyfe, Saratoga PLAN Stewardship and Education Director said.

To sign up for the hike day, contact Andy Fyfe at (518) 587-5554, extension 4.

Local organizations hold events year young, including a monthly Preschool Naturalists class held at Saratoga Spa State Park. To register or get more information call (518) 584-2000, extension 119.
