Pallette Stone and Hayes Paving go green

In an effort to become more environmentally conscious, Hayes Paving and Pallette Stone are trying newer, greener products.
Early this week, Hayes Paving tested new warm-mix asphalt when paving a lot with Pallette Stone.

This new asphalt, ECOBIT, is an innovative product that enables asphalt pavement producers to lower material temperatures by 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the production and during pavement. This lower temperature lets off less fumes and emissions than standard asphalt and also decreased fuel consumption while making the product.

"We paved this test site like any other day, and if it didn't work we could have just torn it up and repaved it with our old materials," said Brian Hayes, president of Hayes Paving. "It went down smooth and was easy to brush. It's a new, high quality product that is better for the environment and is more cost effective."

Hayes Paving is currently trying to get approval from the New York State Department of Transportation to use this asphalt mix to pave highways and interstates within New York.
Other exciting news for Hayes Paving is their plan to open an asphalt manufacturing plant in Saratoga County. Instead of importing materials from Buffalo, Hayes Paving will be able to manufacture their own products and provide products to areas within a 300-mile radius around New York State and New England.

"This is a really big deal for us and the area. We became such a big customer to this plant in Buffalo that it was much more cost effective to open our own manufacturing plant," Hayes said.

Going green and keeping with the trends of the business is important to Hayes Paving, and using the ECOBIT product will only help Hayes Paving and Pallette Stone to move further into the "green era."

ECOBIT is produced and distributed by All States Materials Group. The product is a blend of high-quality liquid asphalt cement and a new Sonneborn, Inc. additive product called Ad-Rap, designed for warm-mix asphalt and recycled asphalt pavement. It enables asphalt pavement producers to use higher levels of recycled asphalt pavement in their mixes without compromising product quality and workability.

A major benefit of Ad-Rap is that it does not change the grade in the asphalt mix. The Ad-Rap is a liquid at 250 degrees Fahrenheit so it can be easily blended into the liquid binder. The Ad-Rap co-mingles well with recycled asphalt pavement and the lubricity provided by Ad-Rap allows good compaction results at warm-mix asphalt temperatures of 240 F to 270 degrees Fahrenheit. The Ad-Rap set temperature range is 185 to180 degrees Fahrenheit, which allows for energy saving since product can be stored at lower temperatures. That allows the mix to store at 250 to 270 degrees Fahrenheit and allow further energy savings.

According to Aaron Hankowski of All States Materials Group, 90 percent of asphalt products will be made using ECOBIT within the next five to 10 years.

"It uses fewer resources to make and, as a small company, we are striving to stay on the leading edge of technology to be environmentally conscious," Hankowski said.
