The Adirondack Phantoms began training camp on Wednesday, September 23 at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The top farm team for the Philadelphia Flyers is preparing for their first season in Glens Falls. The first of two training shifts hit the ice at 10 a.m., with local fans scattered across the stands, looking for a preview of the Civic Center's new team.
Jared Ross, a former Flyers center from Huntsville, Alabama, is excited about training for the upcoming season. As one of the team's most experienced players, Ross is hoping to set a good example for the younger and novice players.
"I want to help lead the team and teach the young guys about personal and team success. We have a very good team this season, hopefully we'll make it to the Calder Cup," Ross said.
Mike Ratchuk, a returning defensive Phantoms player from Buffalo is also excited about starting the season.
"I feel really good about playing. I couldn't sleep last night, I was so anxious to get on the ice," Ratchuk said.
Most of the team arrived in the area on Monday, and have yet to settle into permanent housing. However, the players seem pleased with their location.
"I've only been here a day and I can already tell that it's a beautiful area. I saw lots of deer and wildlife on the way up. The Adirondack area is great," Ross said.
According to Jon Matsumoto, returning center, most of the players are scouting Glens Falls and Saratoga for housing.
Matsumoto said his first impression of the area was its small community feel. "But we're here to play hockey," Matsumoto said.
The Phantoms are set to play exhibition games against the Albany River Rats on Friday night, face off at 7: 30 p.m., followed by a second match on Saturday at the Times Union Center, beginning at 5 p.m.
On Wednesday it was still too early to tell the line up for the weekend's games.
"If I'm in there, I'll play. If not I won't, but I'll still be excited about the game," Ratchuk said.
