Seniors - Movement and Touch for Today's Seniors

Our senior population is growing! The seniors of today and tomorrow are healthier and more active than any senior population before. Not only are the advances in technology and medicine changing the life expectancy and the quality of life, but also our seniors today are more educated and understand the importance of having touch and movement in their lives.

Touch and movement are two basic requirements for optimum health. Receiving a massage and/or practicing yoga can offer amazing benefits for the mind, spirit and body of older people. Both evoke a powerful relaxation response and a thorough connection with one's self wanting to feel good and be healthy.

As our bodies age, some say it is expected to experience discomfort and aches; that this is the norm. However, many of them are avoidable. Movement is one of the best medicines available. When we don't move our amazing bodies the results can be chronic muscle tension and stiffness of joints. By moving we keep our bodies limber and supple. Simple yoga poses can build muscle tone, flexibility and lubricate the joints all keeping you at ease in your body. The advantage of learning a basic series of poses is that as you move through a series all major muscle groups are stretched and toned. Yoga also teaches us to be flexible in the mind and spirit.

Receiving nurturing touch from a licensed massage therapist (LMT) during a therapeutic massage offers many benefits to seniors just as it does any other massage client. These benefits include improved blood and lymph circulation; faster healing; pain relief; restored range of motion and flexibility; reduced anxiety, tension and stress; relief from depression; and enhanced immune function. The LMT at the beginning of your session will perform a health intake and discuss what your goals are for your massage. During the massage, the LMT may use a variety of techniques to accomplish your goals while ensuring that you are safe and comfortable through your entire session.

Start feeling younger today! There are many amazing mutual benefits for receiving massage and practicing yoga. Both facilitate in relaxation. They improve circulation. They are both great for pain management and help increase range of motion, lubricating joints and easing pain induced from arthritis. You can improve your posture and reduce muscle tension, improve muscle strength and tone and coordination, increase natural energy levels and mental awareness and have an overall increase in positive well-being and general health.
