Hannaford Supermarkets announced on September 14 that it is in discussions with local officials about plans to build a store in Malta, N.Y.
The store, which would be 35,000 square feet and include a pharmacy, is proposed for the west end of the Malta Mall at the southeast corner of Round Lake Road and Chango Drive. Grand Union left the site about a decade ago, and the space has been a dead spot ever since.
Paul J. Sausville, Malta Town Supervisor is excited about the project.
"People have wanted a local grocery store for a while; there's been a big effort since Grand Union left a decade ago. It's a great location. It's already zoned for that kind of use." Sausville said.
The Malta Hannaford would feature a butcher shop, produce and seafood departments, a bakery and deli, and a large selection of natural and organic foods.
"We look forward to providing people in central Saratoga County with a new Hannaford store that offers a wide range of fresh, high-quality foods at great value, as well as the convenience for customers to fill prescriptions while they shop," Michael Norton, Hannaford Spokesperson, said.
The supermarket would employ approximately 100 associates, and Sausville is pleased that the new Hannaford will bring jobs to the area, including construction jobs.
"It's certainly helpful, especially in this economy. We need more jobs," Sausville said.
"And with construction under way in Malta for an Advance Micro Devices computer chip plant, we're pleased to be part of the revitalization of the area and to help serve Malta's growing needs," Norton said.
According to Sausville, there is still quite a bit of planning to be done. Hannaford representatives need to conduct a site plan review and come up with a design that satisfies the town's zoning and building standards. However, he is confident in the company's intentions.
