SWHE BOCES Announces Name Changes
The newly opened Therapeutic Support Program at St. Joseph's - a middle school operated by the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES - has changed its name to Washington Street Teaching and Learning Center (Washington StreetTLC).
The name change reflects the separation between church and state and better links Washington Street TLC to its partner school - Broad StreetTLC - which provides services for elementary school children. Both schools provide a continuum of services for children with emotional and behavioral challenges who live within the WSWHE BOCES supervisory area.
In addition, WSWHE BOCES has renamed its Horizons Program to Therapeutic Support Program North (TSP North). TSP North is located on the Fort Edward Central School District campus and serves students in grades 9-12. The name change more accurately describes the alternative learning setting for students with special needs and connects it with its partner school, TSP South, which is located on the F. Donald Myers Education Center campus in Saratoga Springs.
Leave Your Car at Home Week
Sustainable Skidmore and Saratoga Healthy Transportation Network partnered up for the 3rd annual Leave your Car at Home Week, which began on Sunday, September 20. The week long event, which concludes on September 26, promotes eco-neutral and healthy transportation. During Leave Your Car at Home Week, people are encouraged to walk, bike, carpool, or take a bus to work. Participants will help reduce carbon emissions.
Last year over 100 participants logged their miles and modes of transportation, avoiding a total of 5028 miles driven, preventing 3950 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions, and saving $712 on gas. If the same participants adopted the Leave Your Car at Home Week mission into their daily lifestyle, they would avoid emitting 1.8 million lbs of carbon dioxide in just one year, saving about $327, 737 on gas.
Participants can form teams and log their miles saved online at http://cms.skidmore.edu/sustainability/carpool/survey.cfm. To find bus schedules, visit cdta.org.

Female Police Department employees may reach settlement
Eight female Saratoga Springs Police Department employees captured headlines in August, regarding human rights violations in the Department's bathroom and locker-room facilities. The female employees claimed the facilities to be inadequate, and a 2008 Human Rights investigation found probable cause that their rights had been violated. In August of 2009, a judge suggested a settlement of $5,000 for each of the 8 female employees. The Police Department will also have to create a locker room to fit the needs of female employees. The settlement is awaiting approval, which just might come to fruition during Friday's special session City Council meeting. The meeting is schedule for 12 p.m. on Friday.
Five Skidmore College athletes earned Liberty League honors this week.
Field hockey junior Claire Superak (Carrboro, N.C.), women's soccer players Megan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) and Rebecca Russo (Belmont, Mass.) and women's tennis players Danika Robison (South Burlington, Vt.) and Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) all were recognized for their play. Superak and Sleezer both earned Co-Defensive Performer of the week while Russo and Mendoza took home Co-Rookie of the Week honors and Robison earned women's tennis Co-Performer of the Week.
Superak helped lead a Thoroughbred defense that allowed just six shots on goal in a 6-1 victory at Union. Superak also contributed an assist for 12th-ranked Skidmore.
Sleezer made seven saves in Skidmore's 1-0 upset of Amherst for her fourth shutout of the season.
Russo's first collegiate goal ended up being the game-winner in Skidmore's victory over Amherst. She played a key role in the Thoroughbreds' two victories this weekend, playing all 180 minutes.
Robison won number one singles 6-3, 6-1 in Skidmore's 9-0 victory over Hamilton. She combined with Nataly Mendoza to win number one doubles 8-1.
Mendoza had a strong performance in her collegiate debut, winning 6-4, 6-2 at number three singles and combining with Robison for the victory at number one doubles. Women's tennis travels to Geneva, N.Y. for the ITA Regionals on Friday.
