For those who want a good Halloween scare and support a good cause at the same time, Operation Adopt a Soldier, Inc. will be hosting their fourth annual haunted hayride and haunted house on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24 from 5 to 10 p.m. at Gavin Park in Wilton.
The two evenings will include more than 20 games for children of all ages, a dunk booth, costume contests, a bounce house and a light show and music, along with the traditional haunted hayride and house for the thrill-seekers. The cost is $3 for the hayride.

"This is a fun event for all ages and families," said Richard "Red" Lucas, a volunteer for Operation Adopt a Soldier. "There are plenty of activities to amuse everyone and we really love it when people show up in costume."

The event is sponsored by Vineck & Ariel Farms and all proceeds go directly to Operation Adopt a Soldier. All of the people who work the Halloween event are on a volunteer basis, and more are always welcome, Lucas said. For those who are unable to donate their time, the organization always accepts monetary donations and items to ship overseas.

"All of the money that we make through fundraisers or that is donated to us goes directly for postage to mail boxes to the troops," Lucas said. "It doesn't matter if the troops are from here or from Texas; we send boxes to any name that is given to us."

Currently there are more than 460 names on the list to send packages to, and each package costs $10.35 to mail, regardless of the weight.

Operation Adopt a Soldier, Inc. is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization comprised of people who are committed to raising awareness of the American people of the day-to-day sacrifices that our military men and women and their families make to protect our freedoms. It is also their goal to bring a sense of home to the soldiers serving overseas by way of letters, packages, gifts, phone cards, etc.

The organization originated at Mount McGregor Correctional Facility in Wilton, spearheaded by Cliff Seguin and other employees of the facility in the early days of the war in Iraq. They began sending care packages to one platoon of soldiers from the 368th Combat Engineers, in which Sequin's son was serving. A partnership was formed between Sequin and Dominick Commisso who was also sending care packages to his two sons who were serving in Iraq. In 2004, Terry Perry founded Project Yellow Ribbon, and joined forces with Operation Adopt a Soldier along with Helping Hands of New York. Their message is clear: no soldier will be forgotten. Each day volunteers work tirelessly at their Wilton headquarters to pack and send hundreds of boxes to troops overseas, host events and rallies to support their cause and give presentations at local schools, churches and youth groups to spread the word of their organization and raise awareness of the troops that are still fighting overseas.

Lucas became involved with Operation Adopt a Soldier last year when he happened to stop by the Haunted Hayride at Gavin Park and was "drafted" as a volunteer, he said.

"It's a great cause to be involved in. Just helping the troops is fantastic and sometimes we get to meet some of the soldiers when they return home, and getting a 'thank you' from them is so heartwarming," he said.
