It's not every day that someone can go to the gym to grab a cup of
coffee and catch up with a friend, but once Saratoga Health and
Wellness opens its doors, it's a very real possibility.
For the past 10 years, Mike Lapolla, Nick Galuardi, Erin Mattson and Rebecca Mahoney have been working together to better the lives of others through exercise and proper nutrition. When the opportunity presented itself to open their own wellness center, the team couldn't pass up the option.
"Our ultimate goal is to create a sense of community at Saratoga Health and Wellness," Lapolla said. "We want this to be an experience for our clients and offer not just a place to work out but a place to feel comfortable with a friendly atmosphere."
Since July, the owners of Saratoga Health and Wellness have been constructing the gym with their own hands and abilities. All summer the staff has worked long hours framing, hanging lights and drop ceilings, painting, sheet rocking their space at 30 Gick Road off Route 50 in Saratoga Springs.
"There have been obstacles and hurdles, but we have learned a lot in this process," Galuardi said.
Once complete, the gym will feature top-of-the-line Nautilus strength training equipment and Lifefitness cardio machines and a whole slew of services including:
- Body Composition Testing
- 1-week Activity Assessment with an Accelerometer
- Wellness Coaching: 3 month packages
- Personalized Training
- Anaerobic threshold testing for assessing and identifying a target heart rate
- Telemetric ECG monitoring of your heart rate WHILE you exercise.
- Blood Lactate Testing
- Lipid profile testing
- Nutrition analysis
- Nutrition meal planning and strategic implementation for your unique needs
- Healthy shopping consultations
The staff is ready and willing to help people of all skill levels from someone training for a marathon to a mother who wants to lose baby weight to those who are obese or newly diagnosed with diabetes.
"We want everyone to feel comfortable coming here and working out. We'll know everyone's names and hope that the members get to know each other. At most gyms treadmills are places looking out windows, which is nice, but we are placing them facing each other to encourage people to chat, build a relationship and push each other to work harder," Galuardi said.
Another unique aspect to Saratoga Health and Wellness is that memberships can be purchased as single memberships or two people can go in on a membership together to save money.
"We don't care if you are a couple, mother and daughter, best friends or neighbors. You don't have to be family to get a joint membership, we just want people coming in, setting goals and meeting them. Workout partners aren't always a spouse or family member," Lapolla said.
Finally, after a long workout or while waiting for a partner to finish up his or her routine, a patron can sit in a café/lounge area, enjoy a cup of coffee on a comfortable couch and catch up on the news or read a book.
"We want to have a social aspect available at all times, because that is what we are all about. Saratoga Health and Wellness is all about community. We want to be different than other gyms; we want to build relationships," Lapolla said.
Saratoga Health and Wellness is due to open in late October, but since the staff is building the center on their own, they don't have an exact target opening date.
"It's been a challenge but we are just excited to get this project off the ground. We are nervous but glad to be getting back into the community," Lapolla said.
