Campaign Profiles Running a Political Campaign: Ken Ivins

Running a political campaign is no doubt a daunting task.
Long hours and hard work days are the first thing most people think about when it comes to campaigning. We've all had the knocks on our front doors and flyers in our mailboxes, but what does it really take for a politician to get their name on the forefronts of people's minds and get their votes? According to Republican/ Conservative/Independent candidate Kenneth Ivins, running for reelection for the Commissioner of Finance, being available to the public is very important.

"We have to get our views to the public with tools such as reader's views in newspapers or doing interviews with reporters and answering questionnaires," he said. "It takes a lot of time and we have to design our own literature and door hangers."

Ivins said he is running for reelection because one term, which is two years, is simply not enough time to get a job done well.

"I've started a lot of things in the department, and I'm working with this new budget and I want to see it through, especially right now with a huge deficit and loss of VLT (video lottery terminal) revenue to the city," he said.

Before he ran for election for the first time two years ago he had helped with other campaigns so he said he knew a little bit about what he was getting himself into.

"The main thing is how much time it takes. Going to every household in the city is a time consuming task," he said.

When asked how he felt about going door-to-door and receiving opposition, he said that is something he fully expects.

"Most of the time the door-to-door campaign is a positive experience. There are definitely people who disagree with what I stand for, and that is okay. It's good for all of us to hear other points of view and take them into consideration. It may not change my campaign, but at least they know I'm listening," Ivins said.

Another part of running a campaign is fundraising. According to the New York State Department of Elections, from 2007 through the presents, expenses to the Citizens for Ivins campaign have totaled more than $24,000. These expenses are from mailings, postage, lawn signs, door hangers and other promotional materials for Ivins' campaign. He said that about two to four receptions are held in his name to raise money for his campaign for reelection.
An important tool for anyone running a campaign in the modern era is an easily accessible website. Ivins' website not only has a personal statement but testimonials from supporters, links to recent newspaper articles, write up on issues facing Saratoga Springs and a place where supporters can donate to his campaign without mailing out a check or attending a fundraiser.

Ivins stated that he basically began his campaign for reelection the day he was voted into office two years ago.

"It's a never-ending process. We always have to be out there, letting the citizens know where we stand. I really started to hit the roads in July and August though, but it's something that doesn't stop once we are elected. We have to keep working," he said. "I enjoy serving the community and want to continue that effort for the next two years, so I felt I needed to take the bull by the horns."
