"Dorothy" Drops By

Like a tornado propelling in from Kansas, 12 year-old Carolyn Shields blew into our offices on Monday in between classes as a 7th grader at Maple Avenue and her final week of rehearsal.
She represented more than 50 children who will perform in the Saratoga Children's Theater's presentation of L. Frank Baum's 1900 classic "The Wizard of Oz," this weekend, and invites everyone to attend!

Carolyn, who acts and sings in the lead role of "Dorothy" in the musical is "very excited" to be performing her favorite role for the first time before a live audience tonight. She earned the role by going straight for the bulls-eye with a rendition of "Over the Rainbow" at her audition. She is enamored with her yellow brick road mates, citing the Lion (Justin Newkirk), Tin Man (Justin De Maria), Scarecrow (Jonah Moberg) and of course the Wizard (Egan Mills) as "the most amazing actors I have ever seen."

Prior to "Wizard" Carolyn, who moved to Saratoga when she was 8, has appeared as both a soldier and a hairdresser in a July production of 'Moulin Rouge,' and has tackled such challenging roles as Sneezy and Tinkerbell as far back as kindergarden! Without any formal voice or dance training to date, Carolyn credits her teacher ("Mrs. Fuchs") in her hometown of Thousand Oaks, California for initially giving her the singing and acting bug.

Her driver (mom - Lisa) recalls that Carolyn always had an outgoing sparkling personality, but it was the first time she was called upon to do a solo in church when in first grade that she knew she had a performer in the family.

The next challenge for our 'Dorothy' is to audition for her next school play, which will be "Willy Wonka" in which she would like to be "either Violet or Veruca, but really, anything would be great!"

well i went to see it and it was okay, good for a childrens theatre...my only complaint was that the lion really stole the show in act two and everyone was so busy paying attention to him that the story line got pretty diminished...i also thought that dorothy was very good except during almost all her singing parts, during which her voice seemed nasally and unprofessional.i suppose that i am just used to judy garlands flawless rendition but congrats for a job well done.
