Greenwich - John (Jack) Carmody, 83, of Greenwich, passed away
peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Monday, October 19, 2009 at
Glens Falls Hospital.
John was born in Glens Falls on September 23, 1926, the son of the late Daniel Carmody and Madeline (LaBarge) Carmody.
John, more fondly remembered by friends and family as "Big Jack," grew up in Glens Falls and attended St. Alphonse's and St. Mary's Academy. During WWII, at the age of 17, Jack enlisted in the US Air Force. He attended Niagara University and Skidmore College.
While working at Parson's Ford, he met and married the love of his life, Carol Kortright on August 8, 1954.
In 1960, the very same day his son was born, Jack opened the doors to Carmody Ford-Mercury, Inc. in Greenwich, which is still owned and operated by his son, John Jr.
During his 49 years in his beloved town of Greenwich, Jack participated in many various organizations and activities. Among these he served as a past president of the Lion's Club, an original chapter member of the Greenwich Elks Club, the American Legion and VFW. He served as a past president of the Upstate Ford Dealers Association, as well as on the Boards of Mary McClellan Hospital and Regional Board of the Glens Falls National Bank. He enjoyed an honorary membership at the Battenkill Country Club.
Jack had many interests, and always dreamed of the next "big project." He loved antiquing, golfing, having a drink with his friends, gourmet club, skiing, and above all, family get-togethers. His love for adventure took him to the jungles of Costa Rica up until a year ago with his son John. He truly loved people, appreciated the simple things in life, had a youthful sense of wonderment and enthusiasm, yet was also built "Ford Tough." He always wore a smile. He will be remembered by his friends and family for his giant heart and unmatched generosity.
In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brother, James, and sisters, Helen and Mary.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carol Carmody; his children Cindy Spence of Hebron and John Carmody, Jr. and his wife Maureen of Argyle. He is also survived by his adored 4 grandchildren, Chris Spence of South Salem, NY, Cameron Spence of New Paltz, NY, Ethan and Eve Carmody of Argyle; his brother, Thomas Carmody of Hudson Falls, and his sister, Margaret Cameron of Hudson Falls.
A funeral mass was celebrated on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at St. Joseph's Church, Hill Street in Greenwich with the Rev. Liam Condon officiating. The Rite of Committal was held immediately following at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
Friends gathered in his memory on Wednesday, October 21 at Flynn Bros., Inc. Funeral Home in Greenwich.
The family suggests memorials in his name be made to the Easton Greenwich Rescue Squad or St. Joseph's Church in Greenwich.
