Older and younger league teams play both ends of the field: Collegiate Sprint Football League, Mighty Mites A Squad battle it out in Saratoga Springs
Army Dominates Mansfield, 42-0
Fans packed the sidelines on Saturday, October 17, for the fifth annual Adirondack Trust Allegiance Bowl at Saratoga Springs High School.
The Collegiate Sprint Football League Bowl game brought teams Army and Mansfield to the field for a thrilling Sprint, and brutal Mansfield loss.
The Army Black Knights, designated home team, conquered the Mansfield Mountaineers 42 to 0.
Although unable to score against the CSFL's strongest defense, Mansfield showed marked improvements over its last two games.
With the win, Army lifted its record to 5-0 overall, 3-0 CSFL, while Mansfield, a first-year CSFL member, fell to 1-4. Army (5-0), which has 30 unbeaten seasons and 17 league championships to its credit, has recorded the most wins in a season since the 2003 squad went 5-1.
"We were glad to get the win today. It keeps us in contention for the League Championship," head coach Lt. Col. Mark West said.
The Black Knights will return to action to take on Cornell in Ithaca this weekend for another CSFL game. Mansfield is staying optimistic for their Friday, October 23 game at Princeton.
Mighty Mites Bring a Big Game
The Saratoga Mighty Mites A-Squad challenged North Colonie this Saturday, October 17 at East Side Rec.; winning 18-7.
According to Coach Dave Karcher, the Mighty Mites started off weak but really stepped it up during the second half of the game.
"We had a tough first half, but the second half was easily the best half we've played all year," Karcher said.
The seven, eight and nine-year-olds knew it was time to step up their game. They huddled, and took it upon themselves to work harder and with more discipline.
"They really got excited. They fired themselves up," Karcher said. "And after that it was lights-out for North Colonie. We didn't allow them 10 yards the whole second half."
The Mighty Mites' defense was on fire.
"On the whole, not one defensive player stood out among the rest. Everybody made a play in the second half, it was such a great group effort. They really worked together."
Offensively, ten year-old Ryan DiGiuseppe, number 11, scored the team's three touchdowns.
"We ended like Champions," DiGiuseppe said. All-in-all everyone played hard.
"We had a good game," DiGiuseppe said. "It's always fun."
The Mighty Mites play again on Sunday, October 25 in Rotterdam at 12:00. Their next home game is on Halloween at East Side Rec. at 5 p.m.
Cheerleading Champions
Although the Mighty Mites worked the field on Saturday, it's likely the Junior Midgets Cheerleading squad gave them that extra push.
The 10 to 13-year old Pop Warner squad is making their way to the top. After placing first for their division at the Capital District Cheerleading Championships on Saturday, October 17 at the Times Union Center, the Junior Midgets are headed to Trenton, New Jersey for the Regional Championships on November 21.
Coach Lisa Karcher described the Regional Championships as similar to the NFL playoffs; if the squad places, they will advance to the National Championships in Disney World on December 9.
"If we win Disney, It'll be like winning the Superbowl," Karcher said.
The Junior Midgets dazzled judges at the Times Union Center with their two-and-a-half-minute routine, which involved stunts, tumbling, dancing, pyramids and a cheer.
Karcher and her Assistant Coach Nina Sinnott aim to bring their 19-girl squad to the top, hoping to charm the judges once again.
As for encouraging the Mighty Mites, the young football players are lucky to have a champion cheerleading squad on their sidelines.
"The parents love it. They think it's so cute that the Mitey Mites have 'real cheerleaders'," Karcher said.
