"Foodie Heaven" descends upon Vapor Night Club on the grounds of Saratoga Gaming and Raceway on Tuesday, November 10 at 6 p.m.
This is a benefit for the March of Dimes, and is supplemented with delectable tastings from the region's finest chefs, the opportunity to bid on unique and desirable auction packages and features an exhibition of six of the Region's most esteemed chefs doing battle in an "Iron Chef"- style competition. Congressman Scott Murphy will be in attendance to lend support and greet attendees.
"Clearly, this is the premier culinary event of the fall in Upstate New York. In addition to helping a wonderful cause, it's a great chance to socialize with Congressman Murphy too!" related Joanne DiMarco, Event Chairperson. "Our area's culinary geniuses will create their signature dish in a sample size and beautifully present them to our guests. This will be accompanied by an array of unique silent and live auction items, and culminate in an exciting live Iron Chef competition on stage. A fun-filled night for everybody is in store, and it will be a VERY successful night for babies!"
Admission for the public is $75 per person, and tickets can be purchased by contacting Karen Patterson at kpatterson@marchofdimes.com or calling (518) 453-0474.
Additionally, there are individual honorary sponsorship opportunities that start at $125 to $500, and corporate sponsorship packages at levels ranging from $750 to $10,000 available. One of the many benefits that are included at the $10,000 Exclusive Premier Sponsor level is having the opportunity to have Congressman Murphy sit with your group of 20 during the event in Vapor's lower level VIP lounge.
The "iron chefs" represent a cross-section of the Capital Region's cooking elite:
- Jim Cavanaugh of Bellini's
- Teddy Somboon of Blue
Spice Thai Restaurant
- Gardner Crandall of
Scrimshaw at the Desmond
- Kevin Roberts - Crowne Plaza
Downtown Albany
- Rachel Mabb BBL Hospitality
at the Hilton Garden Inn, Troy
- Jaime Ortiz - 677 Prime
As opposed to just two teams competing head-to-head as on the Food Network Show, all six March of Dimes "iron chefs" will do battle simultaneously. The judging will be blind, and those aficionados who will decide 'whose cuisine will reign supreme' will come from the ranks of local media food critics, bloggers and fellow chefs.
Hosting the "iron chef" competition event under the watchful but benevolent eye of "The Chairperson" (Ms. DiMarco) are comedian/performers Steve Van Zandt and Jackie Donovan, who will provide interesting and amusing insights ala the ramblings and musings of Food Network "Iron Chef America" host Alton Brown. In that same vein, Racino Executive Chef Brent Black will provide "Kevin Brauch" quality factoids when either Steve, Jackie or the audience are wondering about a particular marbling of a protein, or something similar.
Speaking of protein, the investigative team here at the Food page has learned that the "secret ingredient" upon which the chefs will work their magic will in fact be a protein chosen from a Saratoga Farmer's Market vendor. I'm guessing that it may taste like chicken. Stay tuned.
