The Saratoga Central Catholic varsity football team played their hearts out last Friday, October 16.
Unfortunately, the Greenwich Witches were another tough opponent for the Saints. The final score was 42-7; leaving the Saints a record of 2-5.
After an exciting week of school spirit, the football team was hyped but could not stop the run game.
The Witches controlled most of the first half, but the Saints stepped up with quarter back captain Dylan Anderson offensively. He threw 55 yards all together and a beautiful pass to the end zone, where sophomore Tyler Engler made a diving catch. It was Engler's first touchdown for his football career but certainly not his last.
"It was a tough game. Greenwich was definitely one of the top two teams we have played all season." Head coach Alphonse Lambert commented.
Defensively, junior captain Jack Keller stepped up his game; as well as senior captain Dave Mulcahy who had 20 solo tackles. Both stepped in ready for the play, they weren't giving up without a fight.
"We played hard. We just didn't have enough answers to their offense. We didn't give up we stuck it out. We just have to prep for our next game." Anderson said.
Last weeks game was the last game to end the Saints regular season. For the first time in Saratoga Central Catholic history, the varsity football team is going to the sectional playoffs. Section D playoffs select the top 6 teams. However, Spa Catholic, Salam, Warrensburg and Ft. Edward all had a tying season of 2-5. To narrow it down, the top two teams out of the four were picked to continue to the next game. Spa Catholic and Warrensburg may be down, but not out.
This Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Lake George, the Saints will be there making history. The Saints have the ability to play with them; they can give them a game.
"Lake George better be ready this time. We're back again, and guarantee a fighting chance. This is our time" Mulcahy said.
