There wasn't a quiet fan in the stands as the Saratoga Central Catholic
Saint's Varsity Volleyball team climbed the step-ladder to the semi
finals at this past weekend's Voorheesville Tournament.
Justine Jasper, one of the starting outside hitters on the team said a few words in preparation last Thursday before the game: "If we pull together as a team, we'll be good."
Head coach, Maria Izzo, didn't show any signs of being worried. "If we play hard, we'll finish well in our pool and we can get into the semi -finals, then hopefully to the finals!" Izzo said.
Izzo, believes that none of her players will really stick out. "Volleyball is a team sport," she says, "everybody plays well. It takes a team to play well and be successful." Catholic Central, Voorheesville, Berne/Knox-Westerlo, Stillwater and Schenectady Christian also participated in the tournament.
Starting middle-hitter Marie Sullivan, walked out of the gym at the end of the day with a spot on the All Star Team for the second time this season even though the Saratoga Central Catholic Varsity Saints lost in the semi-finals to the hosting team, Voorheesville. Other "-silent-" shining stars of the tournament include- Alexandra Kirby, Katherine Lenz, Justine Jasper and Mollie Denier. While the Saints did not win the big tournament trophy, they did leave the tournament with a warm feeling in their heart that the rest of the season would be a good one. They beat a formidable Catholic Central for the first time this season.
Taking another turn, Saratoga Central Catholic's golf team is doing incredibly well this year in their B division. Last Friday, they participated in the annual Western Athletic Conference with other participating teams, Galway, Fonda, Fort Plain, Mayfield, Northville, and Sharon Springs. The Saint's won the league title and the league championship. The W.A.C most valuable player award was given to Spencer Sautin, a junior at Saratoga Central Catholic High School, followed by the First Team All Star award received by Billy McDonough, also a junior at Saratoga Catholic. Brad Scammel, a junior and Casey Cohan, a sophomore, the Second Team All Star Award as well.
The Saint's now spend all their valuable time preparing for the Sectionals, October seventh, at Schenectady Muni. Those team members who qualify include Billy McDonough, Brad Scammel, Spencer Sautin, Casey Cohan. The Saint's hope is that their skills will once again bring them to the lucky first place. With this talent, it doesn't look like it's going to be too much of a challenge to take home their victory.
