New York State Supreme Court
On September 28, Brian S. Stewart announced his candidacy for New York State Supreme Court Justice, 4th   Judicial District, to fill one of two judicial vacancies at the general election on November 3, 2009.  The 4th Judicial District includes the eleven counties of St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, Essex, Warren, Washington, Hamilton, Saratoga, Schenectady, Fulton and Montgomery.  Stewart has been certified as "qualified" by the Independent Judicial Elections Qualifications Commission, the organization responsible for screening and evaluating candidates for New York's judiciary.

Settlement official for Saratoga Springs Female Police Officer
In a special meeting last week, the City Council voted on a $5,000 settlement for a female Saratoga Springs police officer who filed a human rights complaint in 2008.  Laura Emanation filed her claim that the absence of a female locker room left her with only the option to use a prisoner's bathroom and change in a closet. Her claim was made separately from those made by eight female police department employees in 2007.

Glens Falls Man
 attempted to endanger welfare of a minor
Aleksander J. Michalski, 51, of Glens Falls attempted to lure a 9-year-old girl into his vehicle on Sunday, September 27 at a church festival in Colonie.  Michalski was seen letting children play with his dog outside the church. However, suspicions didn't arise until Michalski allegedly asked the young girl into his car, a 2009 Dodge Caliber that was noted as having Florida plates. Police arrived on the scene, charging Michalski with endangering the welfare of a minor. He was arraigned in Colonie Town Court and then sent to Albany Correctional Facility, with bail set at $1,000 and bond at $7,500.  

Elks Citizen of the Year award
The Saratoga-Wilton Elks recognized and honored one of their members last week by presenting the Elks Citizen of the Year Award. Alphonse Lambert is this year's recipient. Lambert received the award in recognition for his coaching and leadership at Saratoga Central Catholic High School. He has been involved in coaching varsity baseball for 25 years and revitalized the school's varsity football team over the past 2 years. His baseball record is 369 wins, 583 losses. Lambert also coached Tim Stauffer, a Spa graduate who is now pitching for the San Diego Padres.
"He is on the go 24-7, and working with a limited number of possible student athletes. He has put the school's athletic teams on or near the top of the league standings, year after year," Robert C. Lindahl, Elks public relations person said.

Body found in Fish Creek
On September 30, at 4:40 p.m., the body of a female was found in Fish Creek off Saratoga Lake in the Town of Saratoga by the Rowing Association coach and two rowers.
 The victim is believed to have been in the water for less than 48 hours, and has been  identified as Iveta Zizik from the town of Chester in Orange County, New York.
Her death was determined to be a suicide, it is also thought that she had terminal illness, which is yet to be confirmed.
Anyone with information regarding  the victim is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at (518) 885-6761.
Groundbreaking for new animal shelter
On Wednesday, September 30 in Ballston Spa, Saratoga County officials broke ground for the area's new animal shelter. For a cost of $5.27 million, orphaned animals will have a new 24,400 square-foot home. The project is scheduled to be complete by July of 2010.
