The vision for Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist began about 9 years ago
when I adopted my terrier Lucky from the Saratoga County Animal
Shelter.
It was actually the first time I had ever entered the shelter, and it saddened me that there were so many dogs and cats there looking for homes and I could only take one. Well, maybe I could take some others. I began visiting frequently getting to know the animals at the shelter. A twelve-year-old cat who was as miserable as could be landed there one day, and after a couple of weeks I decided, nobody else will want him so I'll take him home. Then one by one I began to adopt dogs that seemed to get overlooked. I took them to the vet, had them altered, and kept them until I could find them people I felt worthy enough to adopt them. It was a slow process, so I decided
to find like-minded people who would do the same. This is how HOPE began.
As time went on, our ever-expanding group of dedicated volunteers fostered and found homes for hundreds of dogs and cats. Many of these animals needed medical attention before they were ready to be adopted out, and the vet bills grew. So we began what seems like a never-ending array of fundraising activities. Some of our most fun events are coming up for the Holidays. We will be participating in Pet Photos with Santa Paws at the Wilton Petsmart on December 13 and 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. We've had people bring everything from lizards to ferrets (who were having a ball burrowing into Santa's beard)! We will also be having a Holiday celebration at Chicago Uno Grill in Wilton on December 18. As it gets closer to that time, we will have tickets available on our website for that event. Join us with your ticket and HOPE will receive a percentage of your bill to help more animals.
Some of our newest volunteers had the initiative to get HOPE involved in low-cost spay and neuter services for the public. I am very happy to say we are now partnering with the Animal Protective Foundation in Scotia and the For Pets Sake Veterinary Clinic in Fort Edward to do just that. We realize that without solving the pet overpopulation issue in our area, the number of homeless pets will never decrease. Our goal is to have our own clinic one day but in the meantime, three days a month are devoted to helping folks who couldn't otherwise afford to have their cats spayed or neutered.
If you are an animal lover and want to help, there are so many opportunities available. Please join us at our next monthly volunteer meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension building in Ballston Spa. Consider volunteering or fostering a pet for HOPE. If for some reason you just can't get actively involved, but you would still like to help, you can become a member of HOPE for a $10 yearly donation. We also have cat and dog sponsorships 2 for 1 during the holiday season for $30 and $50 respectively. You can give 2 great gifts with a picture and story about the special pet you helped.
This Thanksgiving I give thanks to all of you who care about all of God's creatures. Have a happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful Holiday season.
