The Get Away is not your typical sports bar; you won't find rowdy, drunk fans or rival team disputes.
Tom and Gail Alverson recently opened a non-alcoholic sports bar in Clifton Park, giving underage sports fans a place to relax, hang-out and watch the game without worrying about being carded.
The Alversons, who are both Shenendehowa graduates and longtime residents of the community, previously operated concessions for local sporting events. After getting a feel for community sports and youth, they recognized a need for a place where not only families could go, but where young adults could go to "get away" and relax after school, or on the weekends to socialize with friends while watching sports in a non-alcoholic atmosphere.
"We wanted to provide an alternative to the national chains," Tom said.
The Get Away is decorated with local sports teams' jerseys, such as area high school teams and recreational teams; the "Wall of Stars" showcases local team snapshots and accomplishments.
The atmosphere emphasizes the community; youngsters can come in and see their team represented right on the bar's walls, which is a stark contrast to chain-restaurant décor.
"You're not going to find NY Giants jerseys in here, but you can come in and watch them on one of our flat screen TVs," Tom said.
Area athletes can bring in one of their team trading card photos and receive a free drink in return. Tom plans to collect as many cards as possible and then laminate the tabletops with them.
There is no alcohol served at The Get Away, "the closest thing you'll get to a beer here is a root beer float," Tom said. "They love sitting at the bar, ordering a slushie, a Shirley Temple or a soda, and just hanging out like an adult," Tom said.
The Get Away is the perfect venue for fathers and sons to relax and watch a game together in an age-appropriate setting.
The Get Away is a great family environment. They have a full menu of concession-style foods and desserts; anything from Philly cheese steak sandwiches to hot dogs, cotton candy, fried dough, burgers, wraps, quesadillas and fried Oreo sundaes, all of which are reasonably priced.
"Here, the kids will want to stay and talk. They are not bored after they are done eating, they can play a song on the jukebox, play pinball or video games," he said.
Youngsters can also listen to live music on the weekends. The Alversons bring in local musicians and area bands, which
also attracts the younger crowd and gives teens a Friday night activity.
"I think it's important that the kids today have a place to go to. They need a place where they can just sit with their friends, where they can feel comfortable, and they seem to appreciate having it. We've had no problems with teen patrons, they are well behaved. We treat them with respect, and they do the same back," Tom said.
The Get Away is located in Clifton Park Center, right next to Mocha Lisa's Cafe. Visit
