Despite their Wednesday, November 4, loss to Hoosic Falls, the
Schuylerville varsity field hockey team still had a successful run.
The Lady Horses made it to Class CC Sectional Finals, where they lost to the Panthers 1-0.
The Lady Horses went into the Sectional Finals as the underdog and an "under-500-team." However, it was the first time in five years that the team made it to the Championship, so the Lady Horses remain optimistic.
"Obviously the team was disappointed to lose, but I am still proud of the accomplishment of making it to the championship for the first time in 5 years. After having a rough season (5-11), they were able to rally in the post season and essentially start over; that is a great accomplishment in itself!" Coach Erin Lloyd said.
Schuylerville goalie Aissa Murray had a phenomenal game. She started off strong, making a save on the Panther's initial shot, and four others.
Unfortunately, Panther Melody Mentiply snuck a shot and a great lift into the corner of the cage in the first half.
According to Coach Lloyd, the girls played as a team and worked hard to get past Hoosic Falls' strong defense. Heather Quirk attempted to carry and dish as the team had planned, but was shut down by Hoosick's defense in the middle of the field.
"Hoosick Falls is an experienced championship team, and that was evident at the start of the game. Unfortunately it took us 15 minutes to lose our championship game 'jitter's' and that was enough time for Hoosick to find the net. My girls played a great game and they did exactly what I asked; to leave everything on the field," Lloyd said.
The Black Horses are using the results of Wednesday's game as next season's motivator.
"The experience was great for the girls, and gives our returning players and upcoming girls something to shoot for next year. I know that this sectionals run is going to give us confidence next season," Lloyd said.
Wednesday's game marked the Panther's fourth CC title since 2004. The Panthers (16-2) move on to play Greenwich (18-1) on Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Shen in the Class C/CC playoffs.
