Bettie's Cakes: Cupcakes with Style

Families now have a fun and retro place to go to ease their sweet tooth.
On November 18, Lorraine and John Murphy opened Bettie's Cakes, a 1950s-style cupcake and snack shop.
"The 1950s were such a glamorous time, and I wanted to embody the '50s housewife, age of innocence feel in the shop," Lorraine Murphy said. "A lot like Betty Crocker."

Murphy even dresses the part of the '50s housewife, reminiscent of the women of "I Love Lucy." Expanding on the glamour of the 1950s woman, Murphy also owns First Impressions Pinup Makeovers, and hosts photo shoots in Albany and Boston.

"It's very popular on the West Coast, but there was nothing like this on the East Coast and I wanted to bring this type of photography to the area. I wanted a place for women to come and feel beautiful and have these pictures to cherish forever," she said.

As for her cupcake shop, Murphy wanted to bring a fun, family atmosphere to Saratoga Springs where families can come in to spend quality time together and escape today's fast-paced lifestyle.

While Murphy handles the management and oversight of the shop, baker Molly Hartley creates the treats. Daily cupcake flavors include chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, peanut butter cup and cappuccino, along with unique daily specials that range from mint chocolate chip to Boston cream to root beer float, for example. There is also a suggestion box for customers to leave their own input and play a part in the fun at Bettie's Cakes.

"We absolutely welcome public comments; we want the community's involvement," Murphy said.

Bettie's Cakes also offers root beer floats with soft-serve vanilla ice cream, cookies, muffins and scones along with gourmet lattes and espresso to draw in the breakfast crowd.

As for the name, Bettie's Cakes, Murphy wanted something wholesome that represented the 1950s era. Betty is a slang term for beautiful woman, so the name meshed perfectly with Murphy's vision.

"People come in and ask if I'm Bettie. I tell them, 'We're all Betties!" she said.
Currently there are 10 employees working for Bettie's Cakes with hopes to expand the business and hire more workers.

One of the unique aspects to Bettie's Cakes is the addition of a double-decker bus which John Murphy sells cupcakes and hot cocoa from. It is currently parked at Hewitt's on Western Avenue in Albany. For the holiday season, Santa spends his time on the top deck of the bus greeting children. In coming months, the bus will be selling their snacks at large events such as Larkfest.

"The bus was all John's idea. He wanted something unique and memorable," Murphy said.
Betty's Cakes is open Thursday though Sunday, noon to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday noon to 11 p.m. Check out the retro-style café in the Downstreet Marketplace, 454 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. The shop is also available for birthday parties and events, complete with a retro-style juke box for entertainment!

We went to the Hewitt's in Guilderland where we were told they had no affiliation with the bus nor any bakery business cards or schedule information. i can't find an e-mail or phone via google. I can't imagine a business without a phone number. thanks for your help. ps the red velvet cupcakes are the best in the area .
