After barely surviving a brutal knife attack at the hands of their
family member at their home on Woodland Road in Greenfield Center,
mother Susan Chaplain, 45, and son Brandon J. August, 22, are both
seeing improvements in their conditions.
Chaplain, who is expected to fully recover from her stab wounds, is cooperating with police and recalling the events of the early morning attack by her son, Matthew R. August, 20, on Friday, January 8, Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy, III said on Wednesday.
Brandon August is currently in a PACU (post anesthesia care unit) at Albany Medical Center and his condition has improved from critical to serious. He has been operated on in order to suture internal organs that were punctured in the attack. He has not yet been completely sewn shut as doctors are still trying to monitor his internal bleeding. He was stabbed more than 20 times in the attack and suffered wounds to every vital organ but the heart.
"He couldn't be closed up after surgery because doctors are continually changing surgical packs and monitoring the bleeding in his internal organs," Murphy said. "He is currently semi-conscious but not able to speak with police yet."
Currently Saratoga County Sheriffs are investigating leads from Chaplain and have good information on a possible motive, but that information could not yet be disclosed. A source close to the investigation who wished to remain nameless said that Matthew August has told police that God told him to do it in a dream, however Murphy said these claims could not be verified and there could be another motive. He added that Chaplain remembers the events from the attack and she tried to intervene in the attack between her two sons. She has agreed to be a witness in the case against her younger son.
Matthew August appeared at Malta Town Court and was charged with two counts of first-degree assault in connection with the stabbing that occurred early in the morning while Chaplain and Brandon August were asleep. Matthew August is being held in Saratoga County Jail without bail and is set to undergo a mental health screening. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
