Victoria Pool back in hot water?

Two weeks ago, Governor Paterson released a list of 55 New York State park and historic site closures and cut services. Although the Victoria Pool wasn't one of the sites listed as facing closure, a recent development regarding unavailable funding for the pool and numerous other facilities is placing the Pool back in hot water. According to Paterson's proposal, six sites, including the Victoria pool, would remain open with the help of $5 million of the Environmental Protection Fund, which would cover operational costs. However, according to state law, EPF money cannot be used to cover facility operations.

Schuylerville Dissolution Update

Schuylerville began its dissolution study this week. Late last year, the town began discussion on the issue of whether or not Schuylerville should dissolve into the town of Saratoga. After receiving a $37,000 state grant to cover the majority of the cost of conducting the study, the process is in full swing. Although it may take almost a year for the results, town leaders and residents are eager to review the findings and what they suggest about the fate of Schuylerville.

Global Foundries, local workforce to benefit from $150,000 grant

The State Department of Labor announced on Wednesday, March 3, that Global Foundries will be directly benefiting from three different grants, totaling $150,000, meant for boosting projects that prepare the area's workforce for the company's official arrival.

The plan is to create an active collaboration between local workforce investment boards to prepare the Capital Region's unemployed workers for the anticipated influx of jobs. Three separate grants, administered by the Greater Capital Region WIBs and funded by the Labor Department, will help this region get ready for what's to come.  With $25,000, the Labor Department, CEG and the Greater Capital Region WIBs will work with the private sector to assure that their workforce needs, current and future, are being addressed. Another $25,000 grant will further develop career readiness programs across the region, build consensus among existing work readiness programs and create a regional brand recognized by employers An additional $100,000 grant will be used to inform students, parents, and educators about technical careers in emerging industries, with the goal of developing a pipeline of skilled workers.  This grant will also serve the unemployed or those seeking a career change.

When Global Foundries is fully operational, it will need 1,400 workers, which is why bridging the communication gap between the company and experienced local workers is a top priority for Colleen C. Gardner, Acting Commissioner of Labor for New York State.

Grant money will also help with educational programs and outreach. The goal of the Department is to prepare not only the current workforce but the future workforce as well by marketing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math ( STEM) careers to students at high school and college-level programs.

Horsing Around

TR, the famous fiberglass horse in front of Roohan Realty on Broadway, reached a national audience last night on the Jay Leno show. If you don't remember TR, he became famous (locally & online) this summer when vandals mounted an all-out bodily assault on the defenseless horse.
