Saratoga seeks $2 million for new police station
Newly elected U.S. Representative Scott Murphy is requesting $2 million in federal funds from the Homeland Security Department to build a new police station in Saratoga Springs.
New autism legislation to be introduced
Legislators across New York State are working to introduce measures at the county, state and federal levels to have insurance companies provide more comprehensive coverage for children with autism. Several state senators and assemblymen, including Republican Sen.
Roy McDonald from Saratoga, are working to pass bills S-2366 and A-6001 dealing with the issue, which would require insurance companies to cover diagnosis, medical treatments, and therapy for children afflicted with the condition. Currently Autism is considered as more of a psychiatric condition as opposed to a medical condition by many insurance companies, which means most families are forced to pay out of pocket for the treatments.
Spa City looks to cut $3 million from budget
Commissioner of Finance Kenneth Ivins Jr. is calling for nearly $3 million in budgetary cuts after Saratoga Springs City Council was forced to re-examine this year's budget after $1.89 million in expected VLT state aid was pulled, officials say. The Department of Public Works, Public Safety, the Mayor's Department, Recreation, Finance and Accounts are all targeted for the proposed cuts.
Assault charges against Skidmore student dismissed
John P. Capitani, a former student of Skidmore College, had several charges against him dismissed in court last Tuesday, including one charge of second-degree assault after he allegedly attacked a police officer.

Clifton Park man guilty of 22 counts of sexual abuse
David W. Hayes, 39, of Clifton Park was found guilty before a jury of his peers on four counts of sexual abuse in the first degree, one count of course of sexual conduct against a child in the second degree, 12 counts of sexual abuse in the second degree, four counts of sexual abuse in the third degree, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child on Tuesday, May 5.
Murphy wins 20th District race
After weeks of absentee ballot counting, Democrat Scott Murphy became the congressman for the 20th Congressional District after Republican Jim Tedisco conceded the race for the vacant seat on Friday, April 24.
Murphy expands congressional lead
Democratic candidate Scott Murphy has inched a littler closer to victory in the 20th Congressional District after he took a 365-vote lead on Wednes-day.
While the lead in the race has gone back and forth between Murphy and
his Republican competitor Jim Tedisco since absentee ballot counting started, it may all come down to 1,800 ballots that are currently being contested. Of the contested votes 810 are from registered Democrats, Green Party and Working Families Party, and 653 votes are from registered Republicans.
