I just love the stuff on offer this week for kid friendly activities! Some creative writing, creative movement, a great family band, a chance to get a full farm tour and attend a farm potluck and a fab family event at Saratoga Winery!

1. This Tuesday, June 26th starts the Summer Creative Writing Classes for grades 1 to 3 at East Line Books. You're never too young to start writing! In this relaxed, encouraging environment young writers will turn out some great creative work and enjoy every minute of it. Camp is held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays every week from June 25th-August 27th EXCEPT for the weeks of July 16, July 23 & August 13. sign up for as few or as many weeks as you like! 2. Also on Tuesday is the Farm Tour, Open House and Potluck Dinner at Pleasant Valley Farm. They will be hosting a special event on their farm located at 118 South Valley Road in Argyle. There will be a full farm tour from 3PM to 6PM with a pot-luck dinner/networking time following at 6PM. Come wander around the 60 acre farm that has 6 acres of over 35 diverse vegetables and 1 acre of fruits anytime from 3PM to 8PM, or join Paul in the full tour starting at 3PM. All ages are welcome! 3. On Thursday, June 28th from 1-2pm head to the Saratoga Springs Public Library Parent's Choice award winner, the Bari Koral Family Rock band will kick off their Summer Reading Program with two fun-filled musical performances! The first show begins at 11:00 a.m. and the second at 1:00 p.m. Dubbed the "IT girl" in kids/family music by New York Magazine and the "Sheryl Crow for kids" by the New York Post, Bari's songs are a huge hit with children and adults. Her catchy, pop friendly tunes, interactive live shows and heavy rotation radio play have gained the band literally thousands of young (and not so young!) fans. Their latest album Rock and Roll Garden won the Nappa Gold and Parents'Choice Award and was picked as top 10 kids album of the year by Time Out Kids. Free tickets available. 4. On Friday, June 29th from 10-11:30am is Wiggle and Giggle at the Children's Museum at Saratoga. This is a special time for younger children to learn what they can do with their bodies through structured group activities and guided free play. Together, caretakers and the museum foster the physical development of children in a social and creative environment. Kids can crawl through tunnels, walk the balance beam, roll balls, toss bean bags, and make music with all kinds of instruments. This is a great time to meet new friends and get some exercise!

5. The Saratoga Winery and Grill 64 present Summer Kick Off & Burger Bash! Start your summer the right way - with wine and burgers - at the Saratoga Winery on Saturday June 30th from 12pm - 5pm! The event is FREE to attend and will feature live music by Seth Warden and Ray Murray & The Bomb Squad, wine slushies, giveaways, outdoor games & more! 1. On Tuesday, June 26th head to Skidmore's Arthur Zankel Music Center for the Skidmore Jazz Institute: Terence Blanchard Quintet performance starting at 8pm. Grammy Award-winning composer and trumpeter Terence Blanchard leads this quintet featuring Brice Winston (tenor saxophone), Fabian Almazan (piano), Joshua Crumbly (bass), and Kendrick Scott (drums).

2. This Thursday, June 28th enjoy The Wishing Well's BBQ & Zinfandel Dinner starting at 7pm. A rare opportunity to taste several Zinfandels from California's iconic Turley Vineyards. 3. The Double H Ranch will hold their 21st Annual Gala on June 29, 2012 at Six Flag's Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom. This evening is the Double H's largest fundraising endeavor. 4. On Saturday, June 30th the popular Saratoga Opera Ball combines fine dining, live music, dancing, and guest operatic performances along with live/silent auctions to benefit Opera Saratoga. 5. Also on Saturday is the 35th annual Saratoga Freihofer's Jazz Festival at SPAC! The best way to start your summer with 2 stages, 20 plus artists, green grass and cool jazz - it's all about the hang.

Bring all the food and drink with you that you would like! Jazz Festival is a BYOB event and a great opportunity to enjoy a picnic on the SPAC lawn with friends and family. Or enjoy a Southern-style BBQ with all your classic cuisine. Gates open for the festival at 10 am, but people start lining up long before then (we're talking 6 am or earlier) to get a prime spot. If you don't want to stand in line all morning, just throw some binoculars into your bag, and you're good to go.
The big-name acts at the Saratoga Jazz Festival perform all day long on the main stage (SPAC amphitheatre), and the Gazebo usually features up and coming jazz artists, with performances trailing off in early evening. 2. I can't wait for the 1st Annual Saratoga Parrot Head Festival happening this weekend at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds from 2 to 9:30pm. Saratoga.com Presents the Inaugural Saratoga Parrot Head Festival this Saturday, June 23rd. From the organizers of Saratoga Brewfest, Oktobeerfest and Saratoga Beer Week comes the inaugural Parrot Head Festival at Saratoga County Fairgrounds, featuring Island inspired fun and Jimmy Buffett Tribute Bands, plus much more fun planned for this incredible celebration! 3. At the Spring Street Gallery, opening Saturday, June 23, 2-5pm, will be the first solo show by photographer Christopher Butler, and "20 TAKE 30", a month-long group photography project by 20 local joes (including yours truly!). New photos hung in the Gallery every day for 30 days!

4. Head to the Saratoga Farmers' Market for the next leg in the Adirondack Appliance Cast Iron Chef Competition! At the Saratoga Farmers' Market on Saturday June 23rd from 9-1pm check out the first round of bracketed play. Each Team of two Chefs will be given an EVO Grill, a Big Green Egg and a 36" BlueStar Professional Range to cook on. There will be two 90 minute rounds back to back beginning at 9am. Each team will be given a mystery basket of farmers' market ingredients to utilize in their entry. I will be lucky enough to be a judge in this leg alongside Tom Thibeault from Adirondack Appliance, Steve Barnes from Table Hopping and John Sconzo from Docsconz-Musings on Food & Life. We will be judging this event based on overall taste, creativity, use of basket ingredients and presentation. Each category will be scored on a scale of 10 points per judge. The two winners of this event will move on to face the top two restaurants from the qualifier. Come check out the heated competition!

This week is the SCHOOL'S OUT EDITION! I know my little ones are counting down the days, here are some great ways to celebrate the real start of summer for kids! Start if off at Circus Cafe, then check out a Strawberry & Ice Cream festival, a community garden where they can get their hands dirty, a mini golf tournament and top it off with a school's out celebration tea party style!

1. Join them at Circus Cafe on Wednesday, June 20th to celebrate the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL with Regal Cinemas for the "Stars of Hope" Fundraiser! 3. Gardening Workshop at The Children's Museum at Saratoga On Thursday, June 21st at 3pm. Come play and learn in their community garden. Plant seeds, water the flowers, and make signs to help identify fruits and vegetables! This program is free with admission. Come dressed to get dirty!

4. Have some mini golfers in the family? Check out the Saratoga Parrot Head Festival: Pirates and Families Mini Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 23rd starting at 10am. A lemonade stand for a great cause, a chance to check out Toga Tots, Girl Scouts at Great Escape and Father's Day fun all on tap for this week!

1. On Tuesday, June 12th head to the 3rd Annual Lemonade Stand To Benefit The Hannah's Hope Fund from 9:30 to noon at the Little Red Schoolhouse, 344 Moe Road in Clifton Park. There will be a concert by local performer Diana Payette (also known as Grama Tippy-Toes) and the students from the nursery school (ages 2-4) will be selling lemonade and baked goods at the nursery school. The school is donating 100% of the proceeds that they make to the Hannah's Hope Fund. It's a great opportunity to see children sharing and caring for other children as well as a great way to help support a great cause!

2. Want to check out local playgroup Toga Tots? Check out Mall Play time with Toga Tots on Thursday, June 14th from 10-11am at the Wilton Mall Play Area by JC Penney. Join Toga Tots at the Mall Play Area for a little time out of the house. The horse-themed area in front of JC Penney is full of soft structures and bench seating for moms. Good thing, because they like to talk! It is great for crawlers up through toddlers. And if you have littler ones in the carrier, you can always join in for mom time! 4. Looking for some Father's Day fun? Head to Saratoga County's 17th Annual Sundae on the Farm this Sunday from 12 to 4pm at Eildon Tweed Farm, 1253 Eastern Avenue in West Charlton. June is dairy month and what better way to celebrate than to visit a local farm? Bring the whole family to learn about agriculture by taking a guided tour of a working dairy farm. Over 150 volunteers will be on hand to answer your questions and show you just what goes on from day to day on the farm. Then stick around for food demos by local chefs using local products, farmers' market, horse drawn wagon rides, live music, spelling bee, Stewart's Ice Cream Eating Contest, children's activities and more!

5. Also on Sunday head to the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage to enjoy a picnic lunch at the state historic site while marveling at spectacular views of the Hudson Valley from the Eastern Overlook ("Grant's Last View"). 19th century period music will be performed by the 77th Regimental Balladeers. 2. SaratogaArtsFest isn't just for FAB nights out, it is also super family friendly and is packed with events for everyone in the family to enjoy! One of the highlight kids' events is Kids Do Art, a family-friendly series of events at Universal Preservation Hall on Sunday, June 10th from 12:30 to 3:30pm. The hands-on activities and performances for kids include crafts, beads, pottery, Magician Alan Edstrom, the AMAZING Kids' Circus, Myers Dance Center/Northeast Ballet and more! 3. Also on Sunday come to the first annual Beekman Street Art Fair, featuring a juried art show with displays and demonstrations by local and regional artists. Attend family-friendly performances under the big tent, purchase fine art and craft works, and watch a demonstration of the artists' craft. In addition, enjoy refreshments and tasty treats from a variety of food trucks! 4. Ashley Brown Photography is having an incredible event this Sunday from 9am-2pm at Experience Events Styling & Design, 526 Maple Ave, The Studio, Saratoga Springs. Each child will receive a complimentary 8x10 fine art headshot of your choice at the Simply Childhood Portrait Event. Additional prints and products will be available for purchase, but not required. Guests will also have the opportunity to view the studio space they shoot in, and see and feel their lineup of beautiful prints and products. 5. There is even more action on Sunday with the Agricultural Stewardship Association's Farm Photography for Kids at Elihu Farm, 654 Beadle Hill Rd, Valley Falls, NY. From 2-4pm Cliff Oliver will lead this tour of Elihu Farm where Bob and Mary Pratt raise sheep, about 100 adults and 150 lambs for food and fiber which they sell through the Saratoga Farmers' Market. They also have 600 laying chickens and 100 geese on their 150-acre farm, which was conserved in 1995. A portion of the farm has also been protected through the Federal Wetlands Reserve Program. 2. The SaratogaArtsFest is back again this year! Thousands flock to Saratoga every June for this lively, four-day celebration of the arts in its many forms including music, dance, visual art, film, theatre, and literary art. From June 7th through the 10th Forty-one arts organizations from the area will participate, including the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Children's Museum at Saratoga, Home Made Theater, Hubbard Hall, Opera Saratoga, Saratoga Chamber Players, the Saratoga City Ballet with something for everyone! 3. Check out the second leg of the Adirondack Appliance Cast Iron Chef Invitational Competition at the Chefs on Parade Event happening this Friday, June 8th during the Parade of Homes Tour. Chefs from some of the finest restaurants will demonstrate their culinary talents by cooking in the gourmet kitchens at 14 of the Parade Homes. You can meet the Chefs, tour the lovely new homes, and sample the Chefs' specialties. I can't wait for this event since I'm lucky enough to have been chosen as a judge for the competition! Also on Saturday join them at Saratoga Clay Arts Center, 167 Hayes Road, Schuylerville from 5 to 7pm for the opening reception of CONVEYOR, featuring the recent ceramic work of Mitch Messina, Professor of Art at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. Admission to this event is free and refreshments will be served.
