Would you rather eat pie than bake pie? You can be an official taste tester of all of the pie bake-off entries. Public tasting is open from 11-2, with the semi-final results announced at 2 pm. The winner will be chosen by the professional judges at 5 pm.

GOBBLING PIE is also an option. The Cambridge Hotel, K Ward Realty and Stewart's Ice Cream are sponsoring a pie-eating contest scheduled for 4:00 pm during the festival. Whoever finishes their pie (ala mode of course) first wins! First and second prizes awarded. You can pre-register for the pie eating contest by picking up a form at local businesses, downloading the form off the Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce website or register the day of the event.

The Cambridge Apple Festival and Oktoberfest is a celebration of autumn. In addition to the apple pies, there will be children's activities, prizes for pumpkin painting and apple eating, plus crafts and vendor booths. The Bennington Beledi Dance troupe will entertain the crowds with their belly dancing. There will also be local musicians playing throughout the day.
OKTOBERFEST continues in the evening. The Cambridge Hotel is sponsoring the Albany based band Sirsy along with supplying festive food and drink as the party continues until 11 pm.

Held at the Washington County Fair Grounds, in Greenwich, New York, the Fiber Festival will include demonstrations, workshops, entertainment and live animals. The fiber demonstrations will focus on fleece, yarn, roving, fine fiber products, and fiber related equipment and suppliers. Fiber - it's not just for breakfast any more.

An excerpt from the article reads: "The Lake Luzerne-based Painted Pony Rodeo will be holding a professional-level show on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m., the second night of the five-day-long fair. "It's a professional show," said fair General Manager Mark St. Jacques. "It has calf roping, bull riding, everything." It is the first time since 1999 that the fair has had a rodeo. But that event was smaller than the one planned this year, St. Jacques said.

The rodeo will likely feature 100 to 140 contestants, said Painted Pony Rodeo owner Shawn Graham. The show will feature calf roping, bull riding, barrel racing and bronc riding, he said. Contestants from as close as New York and as far away as the Carolinas, Oklahoma and Texas usually compete in Painted Pony rodeos, Graham said.

One of the primary goals of the Lakes to Locks Passage is to promote an awareness of local history and the significance of the interconnected waterway now known as Lakes to Locks Passage to the local community and to the many tourists who visit the area each year. In Washington County, there are a wide range of Lakes to Lock's sites that one can visit including but not limited to:

The Old Fort House Museum - Built in 1772 as a private residence with timbers taken from the ruins of the fortification of Fort Edward. The fort was built to guard the upper Hudson Valley by the British during the French and Indian War. It served as the staging ground for invasion northward into French Canada. The old fort house is the focal point of a museum campus which includes five additional buildings also open to the public. One of these contains a significant display of the 1750's fort including a number of artifacts from the fort and surrounding areas.

Heritage Center - The Slate Valley Museum is the official Heritage Center of the Lakes to Locks Passage. The Heritage Centers provide an orientation to the community theme; identify the location of interpreted sites, nearby attractions and adjacent communities; visitor services information and public restrooms.

Whitehall Canal Harbor Park - The new "Canal Harbor" includes lengthy new seawalls with boat utilities, large park, watercraft launch, and general recreation area - a beautiful addition to a graceful colonial waterfront town. All in walking distance of Amtrak, the town center, and Lake Champlain!

The Old Burial Ground - Salem's oldest cemetery is said to hold the largest number of graves of Revolutionary War soldiers in the state. Tradition says that a hundred bodies were brought from the Saratoga battlefield and buried here in a common grave.
