What's New in Saratoga

April 2011 Archives

This evening, one of our own will appear on Jeopardy! Saratoga native Ian Pickus, who now lives in Rensselaer, will appear as a contestant on the popular TV game show Jeopardy!

Jeremy Edge Will Walk To Support Anna House and the Permanently Disabled Jockey's Fund

What lengths would you go to in order to round up support for a cause you believe in? For Jeremy Edge, the answer is 190 miles... the distance between two of New York's most popular race tracks: Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course.

On June 12, 2011 Jeremy Edge will begin a 190-mile walk from Belmont Park in Elmont, NY, through Manhattan and up Route 9 to the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY.

After over 30 years of business, the Downstreet Marketplace is changing it's name to the Saratoga Marketplace. The name reflects both the location and the local stores that are housed within the space.

Spa City fashionistas, if you are looking for the latest styles from the trendiest designers, look no further! Encounter, a contemporary designer boutique, is now open at 482 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs.

Saratoga Care Nursing Home a "Best Nursing Home 2011"

The Spa City is home to top-of-the-line restaurants and businesses, and now one of the best nursing homes in the country! The Saratoga Care Nursing Home has been named one of the best nursing homes in 2011.

I have vowed this year to replace quantity with quality. It's only taken me forty-seven years to come to this conclusion. I believe this is the direct result of being raised in a family which included five siblings.....the fastest off the mark will benefit (read: get) the most! Too old for a basket, you say? Never! I insist everyone would (even secretly) enjoy one, especially if well thought-out, lovingly prepared, and filled with the right goodies!

This year, my Easter baskets won't be filled (or, should I say, overfilled) with inferior chocolates and jellybeans. Only the best will do, and that's easily accomplished when Saratogians have at their disposal vendors like The Candy Company on Washington St., and Saratoga Sweets of Halfmoon, both of whom have made it so easy to create a basket we can all be proud of!

While you're at it, why not add a famous Saratoga Peppermint Pig, or for that matter, a delicious jar of Sundae's Best Fudge Sauce? (produced locally in Greenfield Center). For peanut butter lovers, there's mouth-watering (and healthful!) variations made and available locally from Saratoga Peanut Butter Company.

I'm excited. And I don't think I'll be finding old jelly beans or earless chocolate bunnies after Memorial Day this year, either! I hope you enjoy the holiday, and your Easter "Made in Saratoga" creations.

Hair Creations, a Saratoga Springs salon, has introduced Makeover Mondays as a new way to recognize a handful of women who truly deserve to be pampered with a free makeover in return for what they contribute to the community.

Do you know a deserving woman? See if she fits into one of the categories for Makeover Mondays...

Being healthy can sometimes be a hassle. But imagine a location that could help you be healthy, just by living there. It would have easy access to healthy grocery stores and wellness facilities, and few people would be smokers, or obese.

Does that sound like the perfect place to you? If you think so, here's the good news: a place like this exists!

And here's the even better news: Saratoga County is that place, as it is the second healthiest county in all of New York!

Thumbnail image for Yaddo Gardens.jpg....Personally, I didn't think the weather report of Friday, April 1 was particularly funny to begin with. And certainly I wasn't laughing when the build-up ended up being for naught. However, here we are on what I'm sure most of us would consider to be an exceptional day in early April, after an exceptionally hellish winter.....off we go to Yaddo!

What has sprung up in the gardens of Yaddo: Nothing....yet. The gardens usually "come to life" in late May. However, this extraordinarily beautiful compound, located at 312 Union Ave., right past the track on a 400 acre wooded estate, provides a great leisurely walk-about even now.

Yaddo is an artists' working community, and private areas are marked as such. However, the Yaddo Garden Association includes volunteers who restore and preserve this gem of a public garden, where one can enjoy rose and rock gardens, sweeping grassy expanses, wooded paths, and fountains. Follow signs for the public gardens, open seven days from 8:00 am till dusk.

A great morning, to be sure. Just wear your wellies or your rendition of them, bring your animal friend if you have one (leashed, of course we must pick up after them), and believe me you will leave feeling uplifted and refreshed.....a sure cabin-fever cure and a great way to reintroduce yourself to the outdoor beauty of Saratoga!

I'm off to find a new pair of wellies, and saw just the ones on Broadway, where they are to be found aplenty in many shop windows eg. Speck Boutique (a justified purchase as they may also find much use on a rainy day at the track.....) Will you make time for a visit to Yaddo this weekend?

Fashion, food and fun... what better way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon?

The Prevention Council of Saratoga County in partnership with Saratoga National Golf Club, hosted the 2nd Annual Saratoga Spring Fashion Fling on Sunday, April 3.

The event was not only a fashion show, but a spectacular shopping experience.

There is a rumor that a new micro brew pub is coming to downtown Saratoga! If we hear any more details, we will keep you informed!

If anybody knows more, leave us a comment!

Expected to open later this month, the new Saratoga Olive Oil will feature over 60 different olive oils, vinegars and sea salts from around the world, available for purchase in its Broadway store front. But purchasing isn't all you can do...
