What's New in Saratoga

May 2011 Archives

Wow. Talk about losing track of time! Really, I was just innocently strolling down Broadway yesterday, minding my own business....and happened to glance to my left as I passed Saratoga Marketplace and was treated to the latest glorious display of artistry in the window.

That is, the window of theSaratoga Turkish Bazaar, at Saratoga Marketplace, 454 Broadway, (where everybody knows my name, rather like "Norm" in Cheers). This shop is chockful of handmade treasures, every one of them a work of art, and the quality is unmistakable.

Even better is the history behind many of the ancient designs, making the smallest ceramic bowl a conversation piece. The intricate, brightly colored patterns of the countless ceramic items (tiles, vases, bowls), lanterns, silk bags, texiles, pashimas, carpets, and even shoes and boots is simply breathtaking.

Stop in for that perfect finishing piece to adorn your home or your person, or to select a gift which will be truly treasured. For more information: www.saratogaturkishbazaar.com

It's no secret that summer is the busiest season for restaurants in this area. With crowds of people eating out each night, it can be tricky to find a table. That's why we are so excited to announce that a new restaurant, Loca Luna Mexican Grille, has opened in Ballston Spa! And having a new place to get delicious food isn't even the best part about this new place...

A new steel bridge that spans 630 feet of Saratoga Lake will open today, after 8 1/2 months of construction. The route 9P bridge, which connects the town of Saratoga with Saratoga Springs, was presumed structurally inadequate in 2009. Construction was completed on-time, and under budget.

Maestro's may be moving down the street, but the Van Dam Building is gaining a new business. That's right! Jill's Wandering Cowboys, a western themed franchise is open and ready for business.

Blues and Jazz music fans, take notice. The Chris O'Leary Band was recently nominated for a prestigious BMA for Best New Artist Debut, and you will see why as you sit back and enjoy their incredible, soulful sound.

Just back from Memphis, Tennessee, the band received more rave reviews as they took the big stage in a pre-award presentation show. Headed by area native Chris O'Leary, formerly with Levon Helm's much-acclaimed Barnburners, he and his Hudson Valley based band members are ready to deliver a truly stellar evening as they perform at Gaffney's, 16 Caroline St. on Saturday, June 11th as part of the SaratogaArtsFest's 2011 line-up (www.saratogaartsfest.org)

Aren't we fortunate to be on the receiving end......and we don't even have to head to Memphis! And bring your dancing shoes, you'll be needing them. For more details: www.thechrisolearyband.com

NBC Sports Group has partnered up with the New York Racing Association and will broadcast live thoroughbred racing from Saratoga Springs, NY this summer. "Summer at Saratoga" will kick off their 7 week coverage on July 23, and will broadcast each weekend until September 3, including the renowned Travers Stakes on August 27.

Looking to take in a show? The Local Actors Guild was founded in 2006 by JJ Buechner, and has produced numerous plays and musicals including Nunsense and The Graduate. The Guild does small cast shows and their home is the Dee Sarno Theatre at the Saratoga Arts Center, 320 Broadway.

On Wednesday, May 25th at 8:00pm, the Guild presents Molly McGrath in a one-woman cabaret, "Songs my Gay Friend Wants Me to Sing!" Ms. McGrath has appeared in many local theatres including HMT, Stillwater Players, and Not So Common Players, and last summer played the title character in Park Playhouse's main stage production of Annie Get Your Gun.

A portion of the evening's profits will go to the Trevor Project, and the cabaret is dedicated to the memory of long time local actor Robert Durden.

Caroline Street gets a new business: Silverwood Galleries. The gallery will represent regional artists and offer a wide selection of unique items for a full interior design experience.

Nové Is Coming Soon To Saratoga! There will be a brand new restaurant on the scene in Saratoga this season. And what better than authentic Italian cuisine?

Nové Italian Restaurant, enter stage right!

Nové will open at 707 Route 9 in Wilton, NY (formerly Sergio's). If you were one of those thinking how deeply Sergio's will be missed because it was one of your favorite places to eat, your prayers have been answered.

And actually, this place will offer the same high quality Italian food people have grown to love from Sergio's, but there will be plenty of new changes...

Ahhhhh.....now this is great news to foodies who enjoy classic American fare with a twist, and lovers of the funky and eclectic. Perfect for Saratoga County, right?

Fans of the New Scotland Ave., Albany restaurant will rejoice in the impending opening of the second location of this throw-back diner with it's offerings of simple but unique fare at modest prices ($$) which will include their popular burgers, vegetarian dishes such as tofu omlettes and garden burgers, and of course, their famous chicken teriyaki. quintessence-img.JPG

The owners hope to obtain a liquor license in short order. However, Quintessence will most likely open without it at it's additional location at the former Bloomers on Rte. 9, just south of Exit 13 on the Northway.

Just as important as the food is the kicked-back, retro-cool atmosphere which encourages patrons to stay and enjoy the many excellent entertainers that Quintessence hosts, including local artists and legends such as Ernie Williams.

For those of us who live north of Albany with much love and great memories of the New Scotland restaurant, the opening of this Quintessence is really something to look forward to. And for those who haven't visited the Albany location: prepare to be delighted.

Over the past 7 years, we have all come to love Mama Mia's Pizza & Cafe on Ballston Avenue in Saratoga Springs... and now -- right next door -- we will all come to love Mama Mia's Bakery!

This past weekend was the grand opening for Mama Mia's Bakery, and there were some pretty big names present to witness the ribbon cutting.
