What's New in Saratoga

September 2011 Archives

Located at 16 Saratoga Bridges Blvd., Ballston Spa, NY, Saratoga Bridges provides services and programs for people with disabilities and their families. The annual Great Pumpkin Challenge is a marquee event to benefit the people they serve.....come on out for some brisk fall excercise and have a wonderful time walking or running a 5K, or running a 10K, through Saratoga Spa State Park!

It was just a couple months back that the whole city was buzzing about Fiat Feminae opening up their lingerie shop at 489 Broadway in Saratoga. And today, the buzz lingers, but the location is changing.

Want to feel really good this weekend? Step on out this Saturday, Oct. 1 for an old-fashioned hoe-down benefiting an amazing cause! Help children facing life-threatening illnesses by supporting the Double H Ranch of the Adirondacks, which provides them with a free and memorable Adirondack Camp experience!

As many of you know, we give stuff away all the time at Saratoga.com. Everything from dinner gift certificates, tickets to sporting events and concerts, to Halloween hayrides and mountain bikes.

What you may not know, is that the winner of our Journey tickets giveaway a few weeks ago was a victim of the terrible flooding that struck the region following Tropical Storm Irene. Our winner lost her house to the storm damage and didn't have anywhere to stay while the clean up process started. Needless to say, she wasn't going to make it to SPAC to see the rock legends on Labor Day weekend.

You've heard of the the new viral video craze known as Lip Dubbing right? Then you probably knew that there was a Lip Dub in the making in Saratoga Springs earlier this month. The video is finished, and it premiered last night at SPAC!

Where else in Saratoga Springs, or in any city for that matter, can one take a cutting-edge computer class, check out a few of the latest bestsellers (or buy them used for a song in the Book Bag!), have a meal, and wrap up the day listening to an excellent ensemble, catching a dance recital, or practicing mindful, guided meditation? For under ten dollars? Saratoga Public Library  is outstanding in their service to the Saratoga Springs Community.

halloween.jpgComic Depot in Wilton Mall is holding a Halloween Costume Drive to help families served by Franklin Community Center. The price tag on children's costumes can make a fun night of trick-or-treating pretty difficult for some families in need, but with the help of Kristin and Darren Cararra, and our community, we can make this night fun for everybody.

Downtown Saratoga will welcome an award-winning vineyard to town when Swedish Hills Vineyards Tasting Room opens at the end of the month. The 379 Broadway location, adjacent to the Adelphi Hotel, is ideal!

The Finger Lakes vineyard out of Seneca County, NY, which received a Double Gold Award for it's 2010 Dry Riesling at the 2011 NYS Fair, will stock approximately twenty mouth-watering selections. For $5, patrons may purchase a souvenir glass and sample their choice of five to six vintages!

The Swedish Hill Tasting Room has another popular location in Lake Placid, NY. Plans are currently in the works for a proposed beer pub, projected to open in May 2012, at a neighboring location on Broadway, no doubt attracting even more patrons in search of a pint. Saratoga native John Phillips, currently regional sales and marketing manager for the vineyard, will take over as tasting manager of the Broadway location.

A great way to meet your neighbors and start off any Saratoga evening....we're looking forward to welcoming Swedish Hill and seeing what the wine "buzz" is all about! For more information: www.swedishhill.com, or call 315-549-8326.

Lake Ridge Restaurant is celebrating its 10th anniversary by offering a special menu and champagne toasts to anyone who dines there throughout the month of September. Guests that visit the family-oriented eatery in September will also be entered in a raffle for a grand prize of dinner for four, and a second prize of lunch for four.

A few changes are being made along the street-side storefronts of the Saratoga Marketplace, some of which you have probably noticed. Saratoga Turkish Bazaar, a shop that offers colorful carpets and ceramics, hand-woven scarves and other imported goods, will be moving out of their current location at 454 Broadway. The small specialty shop, Lucia Boutique, will be moving into the space by November.

Ready or not, fall is here and leaves will be falling in droves shortly! Do not fear, there's tons of fun to be had in Saratoga all season long!

Kick off the fall festivities with two days of family-fun at Touch a Tractor, and for a limited time tickets are just $5!

The Adirondack Phantoms recently announced that they will be playing a preseason game at Weibel Arena in Saratoga Springs on September 28th at 7:00pm. All proceeds from the game against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will benefit Saratoga Youth Hockey. The Phantoms are happy to help the kids, parents, and coaches in the Saratoga region build a great organization.

A Save The Skatepark initiative has been started, and seems to be making progress towards removing the dirt that fills the bowl at the skate park at East Side Recreation Field. The bowl was filled in last year as an "interim solution" to the liability problems that the city was facing after laying off the skate park supervisors due to budget cuts.

These days, so many have a gluten intolerance (some don't even know it yet!), and gluten-free foods are becoming increasingly popular in supermarkets, local restaurants and now gift baskets!

The Saratoga Gift Basket Company has recently launched a new product line of Gluten-Free Gift Baskets!

The Saratoga Springs City Council unanimously passed the five-year, $5.6 Million Capital Improvement Program set to get under way in 2012. Most of the comments during the public hearing were focused on the two major projects of the 17 included in the plan. The two projects in question were the Woodlawn Avenue parking deck, and the proposed Eastern Ridge emergency medical services satellite station.

I have officially made a pact with myself: I will make a bee-line to Spring Nails this weekend, and I have every expectation that I will become a loyal client. Located at 38 High Rock, downtown Saratoga Springs, between Jacob and Anthony's American Grille and new tenant, realtor Keeler Williams, this salon opened just two days ago, and I'm loving the location! This tasty piece of real estate is convenient enough to park and stroll anywhere downtown, before or after your session.

Not having had a manicure since the day before my wedding twenty-two years ago, I think it's time! I'm going for some gel nails, and a pedicure, and why not; 20% off right now! I look forward to seeing their menu of services, then I will take myself next door for dinner and admire my new manicure. Spring Nails has wonderful hours: 9:30 am-8:00 pm Mon.-Sat., 11:00 am - 6:00 pm Sundays! Call them at 518-580-1188, and let us know what you think!

Market shoppers across the country were given the chance to vote for their favorite farmers market this summer in order to crown the top 20 in each category! There were four categories, broken down by the number of vendors present. The Saratoga Farmers Market was the runner-up for the medium markets category, which consists of markets with 31-55 vendors.

The Saratoga 2011 farmers market was bigger than ever this year, with over 50 local vendors. Ready to eat foods, baked goods, pottery, soap, milk, meat, cheeses, fruits and veggies were all staples at the market. And, on Saturdays they had fresh fish from Long Island, what a treat!

In honor of the final day of the 143rd meet at Saratoga Race Course, Labor Day, Monday September 5 is Fan Appreciation Day. All fans will receive free grandstand and clubhouse admission! Post time is 12:30pm this year. The traditional closing day race, the 107th running of the Grade 1 $250,000 Three Chimneys Hopeful will give patrons a preview of next years potential Triple Crown and Travers standouts.

Hope to see you there!

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) has announced a number of potential improvements for Saratoga Race Course. The proposed improvements will enhance the facilities while preserving the historic nature of the race track. While the list is long, as is the timeline for completion, NYRA is looking for public comment and feedback to determine priority and implementation of the plan.

As you have proabably heard by now, or read in an earlier article, that Saratoga Springs is shooting a Lip Dub music video in Congress Park. It looks like quite a few people have turned up for the video, and will be dancing away to Train's hit song "Drops of Jupiter" before long.

It's really difficult to not get drawn into the upbeat gaiety that is Irish Music, once given a chance. Our area is very fortunate to host one of the top five celebrations of Irish Music and Dance in the country, right at the Saratoga County fairgrounds! Check out the 15th Annual IrishFest 2000 and plan on settling in for the long haul (bring the family!)

Several stages will feature some of the top thirty acts in Irish Music today, from cutting-edge newcomers (Girsa, a celebrated all-girl traditional ensemble from Pearl River, NY), to "old-timers" like the Glengarry Boys, as well as local favorites Hair of the Dog and Kevin McKrell, and rockers Black 47. Whatever your preference, you're sure to find your pleasure at this huge celtic musical celebration! Local dancers will be on-hand to stomp it out with the musicians.

Take advantage of the opportunity to shop for various Irish wares, from shortbread, tea and biscuits to T-shirts, jewelry, and woolens. All will be well-represented and a real convenience for early gift-shopping!

Foodies will delight in the traditional fare such as corned beef sandwiches which will be served up alongside the usual fair offerings (with a side of Guiness if you're up for it!)
Kids will enjoy activities in the children's area, and under 10 are free. Admission is a huge value at $16-$29, with $3 parking.

Experience IrishFest 2000 this year; you'll be back! For more information: 888-414-3378; www.irish2000fest.com; also on Facebook
