What's New in Saratoga

November 2011 Archives

Melanie and Eugene Dallas, owners of "Sloppy Kisses," have decided to move one of Saratoga's favorite posh puppy boutiques from 493 Broadway to 425 Broadway.

The new space is three times larger than Sloppy Kisses' previous space, giving the growing business the means for new products and services, as well as more space for your four legged friends to wag their tales.

Girls night.jpg
Ah, yes.....girlfriends. We don't know what we'd do without them...and we don't want to find out. Even Dr. Oz agrees that having at least a few close women friends enhances health! Grab a few of your "bffs", daughters, mom-in-laws, collegues...and treat yourselves to a laughter-filled evening at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington St., downtown Saratoga Springs, where "Girls Night: The Musical" will go a long way in relieving any holiday stress!

Playing December 1-4 and featuring hits of the 80's and 90's, this "tell it like it is" musical takes us on a journey through the lives of five friends, using the music of those decades, including "It's Raining Men", "We Are Family, and "Lady Marmalade", to name just a few. This off-Broadway sensation has earned rave reviews, drawing in audiences everywhere with two hours of song, and in many cases, dance (as in dancing in the aisles....which often happens!)

Sure, keep your massage appointment (you may not need it after all!) but don't miss out on the gift of laughter! Your daughter may end up secretly thinking her mom/grandma is pretty cool! (of course, men are welcome too and are as suceptible to the celebratory atmosphere as anyone!) For more information or for group rates (holiday party for your office?), call Universal Preservation Hall at 518-584-2627, or purchase online: www.brownpapertickets.com

Brad PittI know about a dozen girls right off hand who would do just about anything to catch a glimpse of super star Brad Pitt in person, and soon they might get their chance! We have heard from a few different sources that Brad Pitt will soon be starring in a film with Saratoga roots!

This heartthrob is going to have a leading role in a drama called 'Twelve Years a Slave' which is based on the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man who lived in Saratoga during the mid-19th century but was lured down south and sold into slavery.

golf-bag.jpgEver wish you could work on your golf game in the off season? You can! At Tark's Indoor Golf Club, you can play golf year-round. Say goodbye to the month of 'the shanks' that you usually have to work through each spring. Visit Tark's and straighten out that swing this winter.

A country club atmosphere, a 3D golf game that allows you to play over 40 of the world's most famous golf courses, food, cold drinks, and a number of HDTVs makes Tark's the perfect place for golfers of any skill level this winter.

Who's talking about next summer already? Everyone!  Next Summer opens on Broadway in Saratoga Springs, bringing chic home furnishings and sylish knick-knacks to the Spa City.

Next Summer is a unique shop with everything from Joseph Joseph kitchenware to Saddleman's cow-hide rugs. Their motto: "supplies for a good life," and they mean it! They carry something for everyone from clothing, to gourmet snacks and even toys for the kids.

Remember when we asked you to vote for your favorite book for Saratoga Reads, the community-wide reading program? The results are in, and the winner this year is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot.

This marks the first time, in the eight years of the program, that a nonfiction work has been chosen.

Lucia Boutique has moved, but do not fear the boutique will continue to call the Saratoga Marketplace its home. Lucia is now located at 454 Broadway, the space previously home to the Saratoga Turkish Bazaar, which moved out of the Marketplace earlier this fall.

We can't all be world-class dancers; but we can sure as heck feel like one! The serene and regal setting of the state-of-the-art Swyer Dance studios, housed inside the School of the Arts, inspires both budding and seasoned dancers even before they enter the jaw-dropping facility. Nestled behind the National Museum of Dance, 99 South Broadway, the National Museum of Dance School of the Arts offers classes to all ages in disciplines ranging from Ballet, Jazz, and Modern to Zumba and Hip-Hop, with Bellydancing, Tap, Irish Step in-between! The facility is a gem of the upstate New York region and continues it's mission to become the premier dance facility in the area. My dancer companion was beyond delighted and felt like we had discovered gold!

The National Museum of Dance is host to many galas and fundraisers, and the School of the Arts is quite active in assisting the mission. Headed by Director and Dance Master Raul Martinez and boasting full roster of highly credentialed instructors, professional instruction is provided in a low-pressure environment, as well as preparative training for formal instruction at university or conservatory. School of the Arts.jpgIt's students have many opportunites to interact with the community and professional dance world as an extension of the not-for-profit National Museum of Dance.

A true gem in the tranquil setting of Saratoga National Historic Park, flanked by the Lincoln Baths to one side, The School of the Arts allows amateurs and professional dancers alike to reach out and touch the Arts in a personal way, and that's so very special; find them on facebook as well!
