What's New in Saratoga

January 2012 Archives

Get ready to shake off the winter blues and put on your dancing shoes! The Dance Flurry returns to Saratoga February 17-19, 2012. Each year the Flurry brings over 5,000 people of all ages and dancing abilities together to celebrate.

Now in its 25th year, Mayor Johnson has decided to honor the exceptional gathering and has proclaimed the week of February 12-19, 2012 to be "Celebrate Traditional Music and Dance Week" in the town of Saratoga Springs!

The art gallery "Mimosa's" has settled in to a new home at 489 Broadway, and is ready to celebrate with a grand opening!

MP900423004.JPGThe Saratoga & North Creek Railway's Snow Train is quite a hit so far this year. The train carries passengers from Saratoga Springs up to North Creek, dropping them off for a day of skiing at Gore Mountain before returning back to Saratoga in the afternoon.

If you ride coach, you already save $5 by buying your lift ticket through the railway, and you don't have to drive up there in the morning, or back in the afternoon when your legs feel like rubber and your eyelids are heavy.

There's nothing better than a spicy bowl of chili on a cold winter's day... except maybe this: the 1st Annual Chili Bowl at the Saratoga Clay Arts Center -- where five "Celebrity Chefs" cook up their best chili recipes, competing to win over your taste buds!

Actually, your sense of taste and sight are both invited to this party, and it's happening this weekend...

The Saratoga Springs High School Jazz Band is traveling to the most magical place in the world - Disney! These talented young jazz artists will perform and compete in a national jazz festival at Walt Disney World Resort in late February.

MP900422182.JPGFor Earth's Sake, a new family owned and operated natural health food store and eco-friendly boutique is open for business on West Ave. in Saratoga Springs. Tina Bakkalapulo, the owner, took her healthy lifestyle to a whole new level when she opened her own store.

The store features healthy snacks, drinks, a grocery department, vitamins, makeup and more! Check out the gift section too; it's full of things that will surprise, delight and inspire, all while keeping environmental sustainability in mind.

Cold air outside keeping you inside? Escape your cabin fever on the Gore Mountain Ski Train, where the journey is just as exciting as the destination.

In its inaugural year, the Saratoga & North Creek Railway is awakening an excursion 70 years forgotten. The railway is offering a two-hour-long trip along the same train route that the last ski train in Saratoga took in 1942.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway anticipates the legalization of Governor Cuomo's proposal to enhance gaming in New York State because they have big ($40M big) plans for expansion, including adding more gaming space, a hotel and more.

Cuomo proposes allowing for Las Vegas style gambling in New York State. This means in addition to playing the slots and video gaming machines, patrons at the Saratoga Casino could also enjoy dealer-hosted gaming tables with card games and more (which I hear your odds are a lot better at the tables anyway).

I was hoping to break the news on this, but it looks like Al beat me to it! Gordon Ramsay, the English chef who is notorious for yelling in people's faces on Kitchen Nightmares, has another show coming up this spring on Fox, called Hotel Hell.

In Hotel Hell, Ramsay will "help fix struggling, privately owned hotels, inns and bed-and-breakfasts in destination towns across the U.S." And he's making one stop later this month in Cambridge, NY (Washington County) to take a look at the historic Cambridge Hotel.

It's so cool to have a local establishment on the show! My girlfriend is a server at the Cambridge Hotel, and she is pretty pumped to be featured on the new TV show. I can't wait to watch the show, and I look forward to following up with a first-hand opinion of Chef Ramsay!
