"Where were you when the world stopped turning, on that September day?" These lyrics from the popular Alan Jackson song are relevant every year when the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on our World Trade Centers draws near. I don't know a single adult who can't specifically recall exactly where they were and how they felt when they heard the news or watched the attacks.

Now, in the towers' place, a 9/11 memorial in place at Ground Zero serves as a memorial for those lost on that tragic day. Saratoga Springs also has its own 9/11 memorial in High Rock Park. Saratoga's 25-foot tall "Tempered By Memory" statue is made of twisted metal taken from the World Trade Center wreckage and was dedicated Sunday, September 9th, just two days before the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The 9/11 memorial's dedication took place at Spa City's High Rock Park where the statue stands. The five pieces of steel used in the sculpture are from the North and South towers of the World Trade Center and were brought to Saratoga from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's storage terminals at JFK International Airport.

The idea for the memorial was first proposed in 2010 by Saratoga Arts, and now, after two years and much debate about its location, the idea has finally come come to fruition. High Rock Park was chosen for the statue's location this past spring, and the "Tempered By Memory" memorial was transported to Saratoga in July.

The statue itself is an abstract art piece that serves a rugged reminder of that day and the heroes who sacrificed their own lives and safety during the recovery. You can see faded spray paint on the pieces of steel and a Maltese cross (an emblem for firefighters) carved into the sculpture from workers who dug the steel out of Ground Zero.

The two artists who created the Saratoga Springs' 9/11 memorial sculpture, John Van Alstine and Noah Savett, were on hand at the ceremony and gave a few words about process of creating the sculpture. They were joined by Saratoga Springs Mayor Scott Johnson and various public officials and citizens who were gathered for the dedication ceremony.

Want to go see the sculpture yourself? "Tempered by Memory" is located in High Rock Park between the mineral springs and the Saratoga Famers Market.
