What's New in Saratoga

Thanks to a group of concerned citizens, the annual Saratoga Memorial Day parade is officially back on for 2012 and scheduled to take place Monday, May 28.

Last week, the cancellation of the annual parade made national news. After hearing that the parade would be cancelled for 2012 because of funding and participation concerns, Paul Brisson of Milton, NY took action and created a fundraising effort on Facebook.

If you are currently in the military or a veteran and plan on taking a train ride this Memorial Day weekend, then you won't have to worry about paying. The Saratoga & North Creek Railway is offering free train rides to all veterans and active military.

Darkness has set, and children in their pajamas board a magical train on a frosty holiday evening, anticipating the adventure that awaits them.

The train conductor punches a hole in their golden tickets, which bear the name of the train, "The Polar Express." Cheery music plays as the train's chefs do a merry dance while delivering hot cocoa and cookies for every child, and the doubting hobo wanders around the train.

The Polar Express Golden Ticket

The destination is the bright and mystical North Pole, where holiday magic is in the air, and Santa and his elves climb aboard. Santa delivers a silver bell to each child, which only rings if they believe. The elves join in the merriment, singing Christmas carols, as the magic of the season comes to life for every boy and girl.

It may sound like a scene from a movie (and actually, it is), but for the first time, children will be able to experience this adventure first hand in Saratoga Springs this holiday season. Throughout November and December, the Polar Express story is being brought to life by the Saratoga North Creek Railroad without missing a single one of the important details above.

Yesterday I asked our Saratoga Springs Facebook Fans to vote for whichever of the five Halloween costumes they thought were the sexiest - for men. (We've already done one for the ladies). Over 100 people offered their opinion, and the results are in. All of the costumes are featured at Halloween Hall in Ballston Spa, so if you like what you see, head over and pick one up!

Over the past couple of years Saratoga First Night has grown to be a huge, city-wide New Years celebration with a wide range of events taking place all over Saratoga Springs. This year they are adding more to the schedule, including an ingenious installation that requires YOUR help!

The price tag on children's costumes can make a fun night of trick-or-treating pretty difficult for some families in need, but with the help of Kristin and Darren Cararra, and our community, we can make this night fun for everybody.

Yes folks, it's that famous time of summer come again - the Fourth of July weekend, marked by barbecues, picnics, and the best part - the grand finale of fireworks.

Are you sending a Valentine today?

...Apparently, quite a lot of people do. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentines are sent each year.
Valentine's Day couple
If you aren't sending a Valentine, what are you doing? For me, today is just another Monday. For those that celebrate - there are quite a few restaurants in Saratoga with Valentine's specials...but if you haven't made your reservation yet...you may be in some significant trouble with your significant other. (Maybe you can remedy that if you manage to give a great Valentine's gift?? It's worth trying...)

...Best of luck with that, and enjoy a Valentine's Day in Saratoga Springs
