About Yaddo in Saratoga Springs NY

Yaddo is a breathtaking 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. Founded in 1900 by Spencer Trask and his wife Katrina, Yaddo is a home- away- from- home for artists of all mediums to get their creative juices flowing in an uninterrupted, tranquil environment.

Yaddo offers residencies to about 200 dedicated artists each year. Artists who are eligible must be at a professional level. Applicants are accepted based on their quality of work and professionalism.

Yaddo welcomes artists that fall in the following categories: choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture and video.

Many famous artists have visited Yaddo—James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Sylvia Plath, Katherine Anne Porter and Clifford Still, to name a few.

Even before Yaddo was built, the land on which it resides had a source of creative power. Before the Trasks bought the property, the land was owned by Jacobus Barhyte—a Revolutionary War veteran. There was a farm house, gristmill and tavern on the property. The tavern at Yaddo used to be a hangout for legendary writers from the 1830s and ‘40s. It’s been said that Edgar Allan Poe wrote part of “The Raven” at Barhyte’s tavern!

Yaddo is a serene and inspiring part of Saratoga Springs history. The captivating rose gardens, exceptional greenery and Italian marble statues are brilliant. This world-renowned Yaddo estate is worth seeing, whether you’re an artist looking to create, or just an admirer taking in the beautiful scenery.
