If you are anything like me then the mere thought of a beach house\/summer vacation\/getaway sends you into a blissful daydream. I think of all the good times I’ve had on beach or in a beach house and almost every time I think of Cape Cod.<\/p>\n
On a recent trip to The Cape, (as many people refer to it as) I tried to take a bit more notice of my surroundings and why The Cape evokes such exciting feelings for me. It was easy to figure out out; I love the costal\/beach d\u00e9cor that is Cape Cod.<\/p>\n
When done right, this look can give you that all year round summer feel and for those of us who live in the thick of all four seasons, this isn’t such a bad thing.<\/p>\n
As I began to drive over the bridge to The Cape one of the first things I notice is the sign. I started thinking about all the years I’ve seen pass by on that sign and no matter what year it is; I always look forward to those summer days.<\/p>\n
Next are the flowers. Bright and beautiful purple Hydrangeas. I usually refer to them as Cape flowers because they are so predominate in front of almost every building, house and store in any town on the Cape. To me they are one of the most beautiful flowers; they are hardy, perky and look good out in front of the house or in a vase on the coffee table. They are a must have for Cape Cod d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n
During my stay we went window shopping and stumbled across a very high end furniture store. Some of the items in this store were simply beautiful. They really showcased the higher end of costal d\u00e9cor. As seen here.<\/p>\n
The accent pieces were striking as well, really playing up the high end feel that one can get if they want to spend a little more on these items.<\/p>\n
An easy way to bring in the costal look is of course with pillows. Pillows are particularly a great idea in a room with a “theme” because they can be so quickly exchanged for another pillow, creating a whole new look. Sometimes the costal d\u00e9cor seems like a good idea in the summer, but can you live with this look in the winter as well?<\/p>\n
The other reality of this look is the color scheme. Be prepared for lots of white, navy, red, coral, and pastel colors. White can be really scary for some people, particularly people with children and pets but don’t let that completely deter you from giving this a try. A nice navy couch with pillows with washable slipcovers is not a bad solution. And I’ve said it before I am a huge fan of white, particularly white walls, so by painting your walls white, it opens the possibility for all kinds of navy, red and blue accents and furniture pieces. Also think light, uncluttered and airy when decorating; the old ‘less is more’ theory.<\/p>\n
Wicker furniture is also seen often in costal beach d\u00e9cor and not the old wicker furniture that your grandmother has on the back porch. These pieces are sturdy. They also give the room a less formal look which is what you want when going with this style.<\/p>\n
The high wainscoting on these walls is one of my favorite looks. It not only draws your eyes around the whole room, but it gives the designer a great opportunity to then pick a really nice stand out color, as seen here. The blue wall does not over power the room, but adds a nice touch of color on the wall to really bring this room together.<\/p>\n
The pillows in the room above and the room below are quite similar in style and theme, now if you were to remove those pillows with the lobster, coral, etc on them and replace them with other patterned or solid colored pillows you could easily turn your room into something else.<\/p>\n
But these playful pillows add just the right touch to your costal d\u00e9cor without going overboard (no pun intended).<\/p>\n
So next time you find yourself lucky enough to be strolling down the street on a hot summer day in a coastal community, check out the d\u00e9cor that surrounds you, the real authentic look of a place like Cape Cod and try and bring some of that summer magic into your home.<\/p>\n
And don’t forget to bring home some seashells and drift wood for display. They will be a constant reminder of your days on the beach!<\/p>\n
