New York City Ballet: 20th Century Masters
SPAC’s 20th Century Masters program will pay homage to iconic choreographers Merce Cunningham, Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine.
Highlighting the program is Cunningham’s Summerspace, which has not been performed at SPAC since 1967. Imbued with fluid angularity, Merce Cunningham’s Summerspace presents contemporary whimsy underscored by a suspenseful, chirping score.
Displaying Robbins’ penchant for crafting diverse emotional atmospheres to solo piano pieces, Piano Pieces is a folk-tinged ballet for three couples, a male soloist, and a corps de ballet that contrasts delicate solemnness with congenial amusement.
Closing the program is Balanchine’s Rubies, which sends its dancers racing across the stage like lightning to Stravinsky’s jazz-inflected piano capriccio, emphasized by a sharp attack and sassy style.
