14th Annual Lake George Polar Plunge For Special Olympics
Plunging into icy waters is an age-old tradition here in Lake George. On Saturday, November 14, 2020, that tradition continues at Shepard Park Beach with the Lake George Polar Plunge for Special Olympics NY.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a separate event from the annual New Years Day Polar Plunge Swim in Lake George.
Freezin'...For What Reason?!
Last year nearly 600 participants braved the icy waters while hundreds of spectators looked on with excitement. These daring participants show their support for the Special Olympics and raise money for the organization.
Many form teams and have fun with it. The goal is to get friends, family, colleagues and other donors to sponsor your plunge, ultimately raising thousands of dollars to help the Special Olympics reach their fundraising goal.
COVID-19-Related FAQs (from the event's official website):
1. Will this year's Polar Plunge be in person?
YES! We have created a plan to customize different timed waves for each team. The first wave will be reserved for our top 25 individual fundraisers, the 2nd wave will be the next 25 individual fundraisers, and we will also reserve plunge times for our top teams.
2. Will the Plunge be safe?
YES! Special Olympics New York has taken extreme caution and developed a plan in close partnership with Special Olympics International and in compliance with CDC, federal and state guidelines. In-Person activities will be carried out in accordance with these guidelines and only as long as it continues to be safe to do so.
3. Is there a virtual option?
YES! We have a BRRR-tual option, that you can register to take the Plunge, virtually. The same guidelines exist. If you raise $100+, you will receive an official Polar Plunge sweatshirt. You will receive Community Service hours, too.
Some important things to remember before taking the plunge:
- Pack a towel and water shoes
- Wear your swimsuit under your clothes
- Bring easy to get into warm clothes (and shoes!) for after the Plunge
- For your own safety, never dive into the water
- Bring a plastic bag for wet clothes, and somewhere to store your dry clothes
- Bring along a disposable, waterproof camera
- Have fun!
